Title: This is a Golden transaction in the history of Bitcoin
Post by: 100bitcoin on July 02, 2014, 02:57:31 PM
By this Tx US govt gives legitimacy to Bitcoin trading. This is the next biggest step after the 10000 Bitcoin Pizza (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137.0) in terms of going mainstream...

Next time someone questions your bitcoin buying/selling, tell them that you do, just like the US govt did.

Venture capitalist Tim Draper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_C._Draper) won the U.S. Marshals bitcoin auction earlier this week that captured about $18 million for 30,000 bitcoin, according to an e-mailed statement sent to Reuters.

"I am against any nationalism, even in the guise of mere patriotism. Privileges based on position and property have always seemed to me unjust and pernicious, as did any exaggerated personality cult."
-Albert Einstein, My Credo (1932)

"Nationalism is our form of incest, is our idolatry, is our insanity. "Patriotism" is its cult. It should hardly be necessary to say, that by "patriotism” I mean that attitude which puts the own nation above humanity, above the principles of truth and justice; not the loving interest in one’s own nation, which is the concern with the nation’s spiritual as much as with its material welfare — never with its power over other nations. Just as love for one individual which excludes the love for others is not love, love for one’s country which is not part of one’s love for humanity is not love, but idolatrous worship."
-Erich Fromm, in The Sane Society (1955)

Many people will be looking back wishing they bid higher in that auction.

There were a total of 45 bidders, mostly individuals who participated in the auction. Of them 44 lost their bids and a single individual / organization won all the 10 blocks. What does that mean? IMO, the winning bidder quoted a rate, which was significantly higher than the market exchange rate at that time.

Amongst all the cheering we shouldn't forget that those coins were originally stolen by the USG from the owner(s) of Silk Road and from a whole load of vendors who were doing no harm to anybody.

Just saying ....

fortunately the auction was won by someone from the BTC community, and not a outsider. Apparently his plans are to provide bitcoin liquidity in emerging markets

No.

If you aren't the sole controller of your private keys, you don't have any bitcoins.

Those unfortunate people had promissory notes issued from a site known for facilitating trade which is considered illegal in some countries. Apparently they thought it was a good idea to place trust is such a site. In today's world, one must be more careful.

Disclaimer: I see no reason why individual adults engaging in voluntary exchange should be illegal.

Yes and No. You are right that vendors didn't own the coins in question (for the reasons you give). My language was loose. But somebody (i.e. the owner of the site) did. And the FBI clearly stole the private key and associated coins from him/her/them.

this is something like a double edge blade , on one side you have no more fear of them dumping all at once , hence creating panic,
but on the other hand, the fact they decided its time to sell those bitcoins in the first place shows that their real opinion is that its price will fall in future.

this will definetly be remembered, but i hop in the future we will have even greather meaning transactions. (1st transaction to wall.st anyone ?! )

Nonsense. What does the government do with otherwise legal assets sized in criminal investigations? It liquidates them for USD. Invariably. Houses, cars, jewelry, gold, ... cryptocurrency. It would be remarkable if they _didn't_ convert them to cash.

USA never moved into banning cryptos, as far I know. Would be different if was Russia or China making the auction.

Even if they are legal, they still can forbid using cryptos as currency, and put strong regulations about who can buy and sell bitcoins

Neither China nor Russia has banned bitcoin. But in a country, which is not so liberal, there will always be caution from the govt to trade. They even make people cautious before trading in stock exchange.

They have paid in matured coin. So Tx fee was not required. Moreover, the network cant keep such a big Tx outside the public ledger. That would create accountability problem for miners ;)

The increase in the 2 years up to the ATH last year was bigger than that, so it definately isn't unrealistic.

However a lot of positive things will have to happen to see such an increase again in the same timespan.

By this Tx US govt gives legitimacy to Bitcoin trading.

The fact that they sold the bitcoins in an auction suggests they don't intend to prohibit Bitcoin trading. Otherwise, they would have simply destroyed them just like the way they do with drugs and pornography. So yes, it does give Bitcoin legitimacy.

Technically true, but remember it's the Government we're talking about here. They make the rules. If they thought that hodling Bitcoin would have benefited them in the long run, I'm sure they would have done so.

Many people will be looking back wishing they bid higher in that auction.

Jumping from 700 to 40k in just 2 years span is a little unrealistic. But, i firmly believe, there will be a day, when 1 Satoshi will equal 1 USD.

Unless the US dollar hyperinflates, this would be infeasible. The best possible outcome would be Bitcoin replacing all fiat in every country. And even then, the price would only be about 1 satoshi = 1 cent at today's purchasing power.

Many people will be looking back wishing they bid higher in that auction.

two years later:

"700 USD were very cheap two years ago, now we have to pay 40.000 USD"     ;)

Definitely a possibility  :D

What?? You think that jumping from 700 to 40k in 2 years it's unrealistic but you believe that one day 1 satoshi can worth 1 USD?

Indeed, learn some lessons from history 40k is less than 8 fold in price a year. That is entirely within the range of possibilities (albeit not the most likely)

By 8 fold, do u mean 8 times or double in every fold ?

If it is 8 times, it wont reach 40k within 2 year and if it is double in every fold, it'll reach 40k within a year !!!

What? 627*8*8=40128 >40k is what I meant.

The USD is already hyperinflating for several years. It's just not visible because all fiat currencies are hyperinflating. The currency basis of the USD tripled in a very short period.

Who even cares, it will be worth more anyway, sooner or later it will be 40K and sooner or later it will also be 1$ per Satochi.
