Title: LTC GPU Miner Source Code Reward Thread
Post by: tacotime on March 09, 2012, 02:37:10 AM
Hey,

I want to offer 500LTC to the first person to give the source code for an LTC GPU miner.  The code must be compilable on nVidia and AMD GPUs.

I wanted to start this thread to get other people involved too.  I think it may motivate ssvb to finish his miner quicker and release to the public if everyone is willing to pitch in some.  So, if you want to pitch some money into this too, let the people out there who are working on LTC miners know with some offers.

When the GPU miner is released I'll put the authors LTC address on here so you can offer your coin up to them.

2nd edit:

Coblee has set up a reward address.  Please forward all donations to this LTC address:
Code:
LgpuY1d6ncPkN9XYVGWraiohJXTqSKdqtL
Current reward: http://abe.liteco.in/address/LgpuY1d6ncPkN9XYVGWraiohJXTqSKdqtL

Or for BTC:
Code:
1gpuEVUaML1pXEUNVeREnQqitfv1DeUMD
Current reward: http://blockexplorer.com/address/1gpuEVUaML1pXEUNVeREnQqitfv1DeUMD

edit: I may as well keep track of people willing to donate here too.

I'd tip some bitcoin or litecoin for an open/working miner.

I would suggest coblee to make a wallet for donations,so all money would go to the first person who would release open source GPU miner with reasonable performance. At least 150khash\s for hd5850

I second that. As I said before, I'm willing to donate 10 BTC for a Litecoin open source GPU miner.

I used vanitygen to generate this address: LgpuY1d6ncPkN9XYVGWraiohJXTqSKdqtL
Please send your donations there. I will send the private key to the the person that delivers the source code.

That seems to be a Litecoin address. Can we have a Bitcoin address too?

I'm very much wondering if the Reaper miner for LTC is just a simple permutation of the regular Reaper miner... It doesn't look like it'd be very hard to port to LTC if someone had a day or two on their hands to dedicate to this, but I don't have time to play around with it.

http://solidcointalk.org/topic/425-reaper-v12-a-standalone-cpu-gpu-miner/

AppOpenCL.cpp/.h : Port the memory mappings to those required for LTC.
reaper_????.cl : Port the scrypt.c hash code to CL ( https://github.com/pooler/cpuminer )
RSHash.cpp/.h : Port this from scrypt.c as well, for checking the block hash on work done by GPU.  Reaper includes the genesis hash and related functions, but I'm not sure the miner uses it.

What I did:

In the cmake list (CMakeLists.txt) remove everything reference cl libraries and place the cl.h/cl.hpp/other files wanted in the directory
Change import <CL/cl.h> to "cl.h" in the AppOpenCL.h
Tweak any other weird errors you get, I think one of the files is missing "include <math.h>"
Compile with the cmake script included
Then try to make the cl kernel compilable, that's where I'm at.  Can not get it to compile on nVidia at all though.

~500 kHash/s on a mildly overclocked 6970.

It sounds like a fucking vacuum cleaner, so I turned it off. Good times.

Thanks, Taco!   ;D

Edit:

I'm getting "The procedure entry point inet_pton could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll".

I'm using WinXP 64.

Edit #2

Tried the 32 bit version (thanks, Ahimoth). Works fine doing BTC and SC but not on LTC. It exits right after finishing compiling the kernel. Anybody able to run Reaper 13 Beta 2 on 68xx?

Wait are the speeds being listed as actual speeds of running litecoin and its scrypt algorithm?

If so then the network hashrate should be jumpin sky high right now.

Please clarify...

thanks ;D

Well, as pooler said, it's not really profitable at this point to LTC GPU mine, unless you don't pay for electricity. Some may choose to mine, but if they pool mine, they will get less than BTC mining.

Wrong actually, I am making a few more cents a day LTC GPU mining. http://allchains.info/calc.html

The hashrate is pretty decent on my 6870, I get 320Mh/s with agression on 14 but for my computer to be usable I need to go to  130Mh/s. I guess with a rig dedicated to mining it could be profitable but not if you want to use your computer also.

It actually has to do more with wattage, though of course the LTC:BTC ratio is important. For instance, most CPUs these days are either at or below 125w, whereas a GPU is from 150 to over 200w.

The price of LTC is comparable to the price of BTC based on per watt averages.  Mining LTC is slightly more profitable based on the average price of LTC right now, however most people would rather mine BTC as there is much greater liquidity and lower volatility (LTC price has been fluctuating on an order of magnitude for the past few months).

Wanted to get it running with Reaper on my 335m (Alienware m11x, Windows 8,) but it has been fighting me every step of the way. I've narrowed it down to the driver being able to be installed, and even got it to recognize CUDA on one particular driver, but that's been about it as far as luck goes.

Update: An Old Beta Driver was the ticket, now it's just having trouble putting the thing together.

I told you, when you solo mine duckie, one share = a block :D

Therefor you will have to wait awhile. Or, you know, you can point your miner to my ltc p2pool node. :~)

Looking at litecoinpool, you have about 300kh/s if it is correct. Therefor, it should take you about 4-7 hours per block. (Variance is a killer though)

Finally got it working on my 6870. Using Reaper 13 Beta 2 Win32.

Stock settings (900/1050)

worksize 64
aggression 11
threads_per_gpu 2
sharethreads 8
lookup_gap 2
gpu_thread_concurrency 2048 (anything higher will cause Reaper to exit if I dont increase lookup_gap)

190Kh/s (less than 1% stale at Coinotron 1 hr)

Using aggression 14 will bump it to 320Kh/s but at 80-90% stales.

Does anybody have it working on a 79xx? It doesn't work on my 7950, I get 100% stales.

Yes, I did that. I also played with all the other settings. The result is the same: 100% stales all the time.

The CL code is specific to the hardware in the 5xxx and 6xxx series...  it doesn't compile at all for nVidia cards and it's not surprising that it doesn't compile for the 7xxx series too.

I had trouble with worksize, anything under/over 256 would break my miner, making it report MH/s rather then kH/s and it wouldn't send any shares. Try 256 worksize. Also, as bad as this may sound, you could mine a litecoinpool because it pays for stales. But you would only be benefiting yourself, so I wouldn't.

Nope, doesn't work with worksize 256. I tried connecting to litecoinpool but they don't want my stales, they call them Invalid Shares (reaper calls them stales).

Getting "Weird response from server." on my 6570 (don't ask) with these settings:
worksize 256
aggression 1
threads_per_gpu 1
sharethreads 10
lookup_gap 2
gpu_thread_concurrency 2048
cpu_mining_threads 0

Next thing I knew, I had 440 invalid shares on litecoinpool. I tried worksizes 64 and 128, and both got rid of the message but gave no shares, even stale ones.

Fixed compiling for Tahiti (79xx), and probably many other cards too
Using Catalyst 12.2 or newer is now recommended

Compiling beta 3 with nVidia card again, still doesn't work.  I get:

Code:
List of platforms:
0 NVIDIA CUDA
Using platform number 0

Using all devices
0 GeForce GTX 570
Compiling kernel... this could take up to 2 minutes.

...same as before.  The program hangs here and then just leaks memory like crazy (~5MB/s).

You got to let it hang for a lot longer then two minutes, at least on my card. Try the 296.10/17 driver?

I'm on unix, I'll let it hang until it takes up 16GB of memory but it did that yesterday and nothing happened.

A CUDA native code miner like bitcoinminercuda.cu would be nice. :/  Hopefully mrlrt can fix this.

Could you boot into Windows, compile a binary for that card, boot back into your Unix distro(?), then let it go on that end?

Bitcoin miner does work, just not stably with VLC in the background.  :-\ Still cannot connect to servers with Litecoin.

Okay, updated to the beta drivers and it compiles now.

I get about 55kh/s with a GTX460 and 120 kh/s with a GTX570.

Kepler is coming out soon, which is supposed to have about 3 times the amount of stream processors.  This should put Kepler GPUs somewhere competitive with AMD ones.

Solo mining isn't working out of the box either, but I'm expecting that's me screwing something up.

208 kH/s on a 7950 with aggression 12. With aggression more than 12 the stales shoot up. Power consumption increases by 60 Watts when the mining starts so that's not bad at all. Well done mtrlt!

When solo mining, I get a "cannot connect to server" error, probably because I don't have a localhost server set up for mining. Poolside, I get a cannot connect to server error, but this time it's specifically a Error 28 timeout, which means that networking is pissy. Probably something to do with me having the Windows 8 Preview running,  but since the CUDA fix was specificly released for it yesterday, I dunno...

Alienware m11x OG, nvidia gt 335m, and an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.3 overclocked to 1.7. I can get you an entire GPU caps dump here.

Hey guys,
There are reports coming in of fried cards from the memory overheating on them.  Be careful mining litecoin if you have no heatsinks on your memory (most reference designs that are rear exhaust do), check and make sure with a thermal diode that your memory isn't at a really high temperature.

Is this because scrypt uses lots of on board memory? ???

My 6970 crapped itself last night while mining LTC with Reaper. It might be co-incidence,but as Tacotime says,be careful!

I'd imagine that's it comes from the gfx card emulating a super cpu running full blast for hours on end. Fortunately for me, I took the bottom off the m11x and threw a cooling pad underneath, so it's good to go for a while. Workload can double and then some when I use 64 instead of 256, though. Toss in CPU and the family computer on Scyptminer, and I'm pulling... 20kh/s!  :P

mtrlt released it and yeah, it compiles on AMD and nVidia GPUs with the latest drivers and version.  It's a little bit of a pain for 7xxx AMD GPUs and nVidia GPUs (aggression has to be set to 15 for it to work at all on nVidia GPUs), but it does work.
