This was shortly after his wife died of cancer. He just puts the Earth in perspective as a beast in which we infest. At some point it will shake us off like a case of fleas and life will go on without us.

Please elaborate. presumably the usual spiel of that regardless of what humans do, short of saturation nuclear bombardment of the entire surface of the planet (and even that might not get rid of everything), life on earth will continue merrily until the sun goes red giant, boils off the oceans, and strips the earth of its atmosphere. however, if we don't stop fucking stuff up, human life will not be continuing on earth.
