Grab a book, the best Science Fiction is written in books. I recommend anything by Peter F. Hamilton as a start (but there are so many more so feel free to completely ignore my specific advice).

Dune, Ender's Game....that's classic stuff. You can't beat that with television. It's been a while since I saw any good sci-fi on television....

Right.

Kubrick was genius. I hate when people who are not enough smart to undestand movie bash it, for being pretentious. Those guys dont get it. It was intellectually schocking, It changed my life. I wouldnt be futuristic minded if it wouldnt be for that movie.

Did you guys cried when HAL was being dismantled. I as a child did.

Moon (2009) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/

One of my favorite movies. It's not that well known, either. I would really recommend it.

Star Trek Generations was cheesy but it is my fav of the movie series.  Seeing Kirk and Picard on the same screen was awesome.

The series finale to ST:TNG with Q was a masterpiece.

Although I'm not a big fan of Sci-fi Genre . The last Sci-fi I saw was Oblivion (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1483013/) It was nice, I'll personally rate 3.5/5 .
Any recommendations for Horror movies .

it not that good i expected more but for good SCI-FI vitit www.imdb.com (http://www.imdb.com) and search for it.

What you want of sci-fi you want to watch old ones from late 80s and 90s or new ones.

This is tough decision to make so pick one and watch.

Personally recommendation: Enders Game, Aliens, Bladerunner, 2001 Space Odyssey, The Abyss, The Thing, Terminator.....

Yeah it was not one of the greats but a One time watch But OP mentioned hat he's into Tom Cruise :P so I think that's not a bad recommendation , If I have to choose one to watch I'll go with Avataar although many out there call it Over-Rated but I'm also looking forward for the next release of the series.

[...] The series finale to ST:TNG with Q was a masterpiece.

I liked the idea overall; it was a nice tie in to the series beginning, and a good explanation of why Q was always messing around with them. But to be honest, the way it was presented made it feel far too rushed, and not very well thought out. Considering TNG is my favorite Star Trek series, I was expecting something better. :(

In relation to the best sci-fi movie, if you're into OVA (original video animation) LYCAN, I'd recommend Ghost in the Shell. It doesn't have Tom Cruise in it, but give it a try anyway. ;)

Night's Dawn trilogy - a wild look at possession of people in the far future...every space fairing species knows about it but no-one talks about it.

Overall, a great sci-fi opera writer, one of the best.

For a movie, I would go with Avatar (although the plot could have been less predictable) or maybe one of the Star Trek or Star Wars movies.  I loved Star Trek: Into Darkness.  The role reversal between Kirk and Spock compared with Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn was fantastic!

If you're looking for a series, then I second Babylon 5.  It takes some time to get into, but it's the best written sci-fi series I've seen.  The storyline is absolutely amazing with lots of twists and turns that aren't easy to predict.

I found Pi good, even though it isn't really Sci-fi and it's black and white (but it is made in the 80's)

Agreed, and I'd say Mars Attacks is probably better than a lot of the other movies mentioned in the thread so far, though it's kind of an unfair comparison; it's a comedy after all, not a sci-fi movie.

transcendence

I have to admit I haven't seen Transcendence yet, but both the plot summary, and the votes and reviews on imdb aren't that great. Is the movie really worth the 2 hours? :)

I think its worth it. If you like science fiction this is for you. The movie presented what would happen if singularity is achieve. So many advance ideas that I'm sure will be possible in the near future. You can download it on piratebay.se or in kickass.to, dvdrip is already available.

Brazil by Terry Gilliam (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088846)
and
Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944)

both movies blew my mind when I first watched them, though Stalker can be a bit difficult to grasp without reading the book by Strugatzki Brothers.

besides these two there were many good sci-fi movies during the last decades:

Snowpiercer
Children of Men
District 9
Pi
12 Monkeys
Code 46
Moon
Sunshine
Equilibrium
Solaris (by Kubrick, not that shitty remake with clooney)
Matrix (first one)
Dark City
13th Floor
Dante 01
Cube (original from 1997)
Idiocracy (not the best comedy, but i loved the idea)
The Road (more a post-apocalyptic tale)

classics:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Brazil (masterpiece by terry gilliam)
Blade Runner
Alien
The day the earth stood still (original from 1951)
A Boy and his dog
THX 1138 (first movie by George Lucas)
Dark Star (with the famous philosophising bomb scene)
Soylent Green
Fahrenheit 451
1984
Silent Running
A Clockwork Orange
Altered States
Metropolis

Star Trek, man! Everyone may do what they want and don't have to work if they don't like to. That's awesome, man. Also you can travel everywhere you like and probably eat all day long for free. You'd have to be careful and watch out for those Borg people, I guess!

Possession .... from beyond the grave ;) (and told in believable fashion).

The commonwealth saga/void triology (same universe) is/are also great though. As is a stand alone novel like Fallen Dragon. Damn, such a shame I read all of that already and I have to wait for him to start writing a new book (in the Commonwealth saga/void trilogy universe).

I never read his detective novels though (before he started writing SF)

thanks for mentioning, these are probably two of the biggest milestones of japanese animation.

i haven't watched many animes during the last years,
but i'll add "Paprika" (2006), "Metropolis" (2001)
and especially "Wings of Honneamise" (1987) to that row which is a 2hour-long animated space opera with one of the best endings i've ever seen in that genre.

edit: has somebody already mentioned "Cloud Atlas"?

Personally, that's what I loved about the movie.  Wrath of Khan was a classic, and I thought they did a great job of taking some of the elements from that movie and twisting them around to fit the new Star Trek universe.  I thought there was still enough original plot to make the movie interesting.

Guys, Lord of the rings is not SCI-FI, it is FANTASY. That is difference.

Sci-fi is based on some scientific visionary, no fucking wizzards and magic, dragon and dwarfs bullshit.
