Title: What has the Bitcoin Foundation funded?
Post by: Elwar on July 10, 2014, 08:28:00 PM
Seriously, I would like to know.

I can only think of paying developers and paying for a lobbyist. Anything else?

I don't think they're still into Bitcoin. I think they're into Mastercoin and realcoin now.

BTC is known as the most transparent. But Bitcoin Foundation is acting the other way. Everyone inclines to doubt how the fund is spend. It is another threat to BTC.

This is getting a bit outdated but...I posted this a while ago and David reposted it here: https://bitcoinfoundation.org/forum/index.php?/topic/752-the-good-and-useful-things-the-foundation-has-done-for-us-members-compiled-by-dr-brian-goss/

They pay 3 full-time Bitcoin Core devs, they've funded work on bitcoin.org, they do various legal/outreach work, etc. They do a decent amount of good stuff, though I always worry that an organization like this will become a dangerous point of centralization someday. It would be better if the 3 full-time devs they're hiring were hired by 3 separate organizations, for example. (But it's better that the Foundation pays them than no one pays them.)

You're right. An organisation like this could easily be infiltrated when you can buy your way in pretty easily. IT could easily be taken over by some nefarious people or entity for their own benefit, specially if they have enough money.

Exactly. But this is not someday. It's today.

There's no need for a foundation. All developers should and can receive individual donations. The Bitcoin Foundation just wastes resources and damages the reputation of bitcoin. It is a hazard.

The Bitcoin foundation seems like a real double edged sword to me. No doubt they do a lot of good stuff and many members will have the best interest of bitcoin at heart, but there will also be capitalist snakes among them who just want to get rich quick. The foundation can be attacked all to easily when members go rouge or get into trouble, so it's not very good in that respect.
