Title: PSA : Final Litecoin LTC GPU miner released !!!
Post by: bulanula on March 13, 2012, 10:02:28 PM
This is the final full version that includes the source code and not the limited "demo" version. This is the real thing. People need to switch to LTC right now because it is much more profitable than BTC ( especially for Nvidia cards ).

Get it here while it is hot : http://wiki.solidcoin.info/wiki/Reaper

Everybody needs to switch from BTC to LTC right now because it is much more profitable.

Nobody is mining BTC anymore ;)

Please post what card you used and how you got it working and what hashrate you get. I am interested in what you get using 5870s !

Thank you very much !

Been out for four days

Profitability is only in relation to the difficulty, which is going up

AFAIK the final version 13.3 is just out today.

It is profitable to mine LTC right now rather than BTC for some cards.

Difficulty is still pretty low so get in while you can ;)

You can listen to Bula or you can do your own maths and figure it out for yourself. =P

I updated the Wiki page to include GPU/CPU Sections, and overall cleaned out all the old listings. Please add your GPU's here:

https://github.com/coblee/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison

I may have added a few of yours already (I think I copied one 6950 from here). If you see it don't list it down twice!

Is it just me or does this not seem profitable for 5870 series cards due to slow memory I/O ???

Hashrate is irrelevant since you are mining with two different algorithms on Bitcoin and Litecoin.

That is correct but I was referring to the profitability that each hashrate can bring.

Just did some calculations right now.

400 khash/s for one 5870 mining LTC scrypt : 0.3 BTC / 24 hours

440 mhash/s for one 5870 mining BTC SHA256 : 0.3 BTC / 24 hours

SO what to do now ? LTC or BTC ?

Can someone publish some numbers for Nvidia please (especially interested in seeing GTX580 numbers)?

Sooo depressing mining at kh/s instead of Mh/s though...

A 580 will probably get about 160kh/s

Mining LTC means you will make roughly .03-.04USD a day more then BTC.

That presumably isn't counting all the altcoins you can get alongside bitcoins by merged mining though, right?

And also pretty much zero liquidity with litecoin as compared to BTC...

My numbers with current difficulties:

245Mh/s => 0.164 BTC per day

vs

265kh/s => 182 LTC per day => 0.001075 LTC per BTC (bid price right NOW) => 0.196 BTC per day => 19% more

Of course there would be a percent or two of friction in the exchange but the difference is still quite a bit. Obviously at my miniscule mining numbers, it doesn't make much difference but I see no reason it wouldn't scale.

I think GPU mining might end up helping Litecoin rather than hurting it because it will act as a stabilizing force as miners switch back and forth between LTC and BTC depending on which is currently the most profitable.

That's assuming that everyone doesn't do it. in which case, the exchange rate will plummet, and your initial calculations will be useless. If you're keeping an eye on LTC -> BTC prices on a daily basis, and you're exchanging coins on a daily basis, it should be relatively risk free.

"Error: Config file .conf not found."

I kept getting that until I put all the config options in one file, called "lightcoin.conf", and invoked Reaper as "reaper.exe lightcoin.conf".  Then it loaded the same file twice, but seemed perfectly happy about it and ran just fine.

Side note, on the off chance mtrlt peruses this thread...

I've poked a bit at the .cl file for Lightcoin support in Reaper, and although I have a few questions (like what the hell the gpu_thread_concurrency and lookup_gap "mean", aside from their role in memory block alignment), I have one "real" question...

Why does padcache (aka lookup in scrypt_core()) use workitem-major order (ignoring z) rather than y-major order which (for non-CL C code) would better preserve locality of reference?  I refer to the output of the coord() macro here.  I honestly don't know if it makes any difference in performance given the overall pattern of memory access, but I wondered if on some cards that serves to improve vector performance (by using the dot product rather than a straight mult)?

Your fine, I assume its caused by lack of longpolling, just let it run, and eventually the shares submit.

No dead, but not so much block shares on pool because of gpu people take most. I have 3 6970 mining litecoin near 1.3Mhash/S making close 1000 LTC na day.

Well if litecoin does become worth more you will likely kick yourself thinking why didnt I keep mining......I did that with namecoin when it first came out. I mined it then stopped because I didnt know if it would amount to anything. Of course it ended up hitting $2.50 per coin in June of 2011.

I've tried just about everything and I've gotten errors compiling, decided to work just via cpu mining and then I get errors saying the config file (which I specified) was not found. >___> Someone needs to come up with a start to finish tutorial. I've been able to get every single other miner to work with a little work, but this one is just a tough nut to crack.

You need reaper.conf and litecoin.conf and if you plan to mine BTC and SLC, you also need bitcoin.conf and solidcoin.conf.

Default config files are in /reaperv13b/ and not in /reaperv13b/build/
cp your executable 'reaper' from 'build'  ../  and edit coin specific files.

./reaper.conf looks like this (I deleted 2lines, "mine bitcoin" and "mine solidcoin")

Code:
kernel reaper.cl
save_binaries yes
device 0
enable_graceful_shutdown no
long_polling yes
mine litecoin
platform 1

./litecoin.conf looks like this:

Code:

host put_your_host_here
port 9332
user username_here
pass passwd_here

protocol litecoin

worksize 528
aggression 14
threads_per_gpu 1
sharethreads 18
lookup_gap 8
gpu_thread_concurrency 6144
platform 1
long_polling yes

Hi guys
Do you know what the best config for LTC mining is for this card:
Nvidia GT330M on a MBP booted into Win 7 (via bootcamp)?

As I've been trying to get reaper to work on as many computers as I can to mine for me.CPU mining works well on there.I get around 25KH/s from it's CPU (Core i7 620m) and now I want to tap into the GPU simultaneously.Which settings reduce GPU use so I can still have a responsive desktop without my MBP freezing and screen turning black whenever any GPU intensive app is run?

All help is appreciated. :)

I couldnt make reaper working. I tried to run cpu-only mining litecoins only and it told me that a config was missing about threads per cpu. I added the config and then it told me that litecoins cant be mined with reaper. oO Then i used the normal exe and it had the error that it cant connect to OpenCL. I have a NVidia GeForce 9600M GT and i can mine bitcoins with it by using guiminer. So i think everything needed is installed.

Whats the problem there and how to solve?

Thanks!
Sebastian

I got it running loooong time ago but I had to wait for the .4 version. It did a pretty good job until I stopped mining because buying the coin made more sense than mining. That was in April or May 2012.
Now, because cgminer is faster and way better written and has lots of good features, I moved to cgminer last week.
