Title: What happened to the 184 Billion Bitcoins created in Aug 2010?
Post by: Kprawn on July 12, 2014, 08:32:52 AM
I cannot seem to find more info on the Aug 2010 vulnerability that was exploited.

http://www.visualcapitalist.com/the-definitive-history-of-bitcoin/

What is the facts about this vulnerability and were those BTC removed from the blockchain? I am getting questions about that, and I do not have the fact to
answer them.

Thanks for constructive answers, backed by facts.  ;)

You may check the following pages.
1. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Common_Vulnerabilities_and_Exposures#CVE-2010-5139

In short, that block 74638 was orphaned before getting 120 confirmations (Block rewards can't be spend before getting 120 confirmations). :)

what if people kept exploating this but didn't make such noticable amounts?

in form of a couple of bitcoins daily

The bug was fixed, so it's not possible anymore.

Thanks for the links, I am studying it now. {Well spotted} I missed it somehow.

Good thing Bitcoin wasn't popular at the time this happened.

Or good thing that it wasn't Ghash.io that exploited the bug!  It would be hard to correct now if they didn't want it corrected!

Of course they don't want to destroy bitcoin like something like that would, but if a similar bug was found they could exploit the small amounts option.

Good Luck!

what if a new bug was discovered
but we never found out because it's being abused in small amounts?
The amount of people watching the bitcoin space at the moment I highly doubt even that's possible.

If it was done in small amounts then it likely could get through the cracks. What is preventing this is the fact that there are a number of devs and "whitehat hackers" who are looking for these kinds of vulnerabilities.

Dude, why did you bump this old thread with a link that has already been posted in post #2?
