Ubuntu, or whatever is fastest & can withstand traffic spikes.

just a little tip: if you are hositing web in a VPS, please don't use ubuntu.
Get CentOS minimal.

Yeah, Ubuntu is a little chunky for hosting websites but it works. I can't stand CentOS.

personal preference shouldn't be a factor when picking a workstation OS. Performance wise CentOS minimal is the perfect distro for VPSs since it has almost nothing in it. and a recommendation on top of that is to replace the apache httpd with nginx or a NodeJS based web server.

ubuntu minimal exists and personal preference is the essential factor when there is no significant technical difference. configuring and operating redhat/centos is really pain in the ass if you are used to debian/ubuntu (and vice versa i guess).
