Title: Best PC wallet?
Post by: Steve Flow on July 14, 2014, 04:31:10 PM
Hello all,

I already searched these forums for an answer, but couldn't find one.
However, if this has already been answered, please point me in the right direction (and I apologize for wasting time)?

Anyway, based on other information provided to me in these forums, I've learned that Qt Wallet (which I believe is also known as the 'core' wallet?) is a great full wallet which also offers the added anonymity feature of delivering your change to a different address.

However, if I don't care too much about anonymity, is there a good PC wallet that...
- constantly downloads blockchain updates (like Qt does), but...
- delivers all change (after spending) back to my MAIN address, so that I can keep all of my Bitcoin at just one address?

Thanks!

Steve

Surely the best pc wallet is the official wallet which you can download here : www.bitcoin.org  ;)

Don't use other wallet like Multibit if you can't use it.

If i were you i'd go for Multibit since it's so lite and it syncs in less than 15 seconds every time. It works perfect, i had a lot of problems with Armory wallet, so keep away from it.

I would say you should read about a few wallets and then decide on one. Add Electrum to the list of ones to consider, i really like it.

Thanks all!

With regard to the "official wallet" mentioned by Gianluca95, I believe this is the Qt (or 'core') wallet that I already use, but please correct me if this is wrong? If it's right, then, like I said, it delivers transaction change to different addresses, not my main address, but I'm looking for other wallet options that DO deliver transaction change to my main address.

Again, I'm wondering if there is a good PC wallet that...
- constantly synchronizes the blockchain (like Qt does), but...
- delivers all change (after spending) back to my MAIN address, so that I can keep all of my Bitcoin at just one address?

I appreciate the info from cech4204a and joshraban76 about Multibit and Electrum, and I've spent the last little while reading up on them (and others), but I was unable to determine if either of them meet both of the criteria that I mentioned above. Does anyone happen to know off-hand if they (or any others) do?

Thanks again!

Steve

Run bitcoin-qt fulltime and help support the network

Electrum does not download the blockchain to your pc. It downloads it to a central server. It does however send change to your main address. For example you receive .1 bitcoin delivered to a receiving address. On your next send of say .05 it will take that .1 from that address and you will find the change under Main account. Electrum meets only one of your criteria. For me I chose electrum because i am running only 120g ssd. If i was to upgrade I may consider running qt but for now electrum is doing what i need it to.

Thanks for your input, ThomasCrowne and deebob, but you guys must have missed that I already do run Qt, but I'm instead looking for a different wallet that delivers all change (after spending) back to my MAIN address, so that I can keep all of my Bitcoin at just one address; Qt does not do this.

Thanks so much, joshraban76! It looks like this is the precise information I needed. I guess there are no wallets, currently, that do both - just one or the other. Thanks again!

If we are talking about Bitcoin PC wallet I will always choose  Bitcoin Core as a best one.

I was using Electrum, Multibit, etc. and everything is OK with those but ..

Bitcoin Core was at 1st developed by ... by a father of Bitcoin. Satoshi Namakoto.
I believe he is contributing @GitHub with Core Devs :) and nobody even know about it.

There are some bugs in it ... like in all of the wallets! :)
I never had any bug at any wallet ... :D I am lucky perhaps and well I am not doing many transactions ... one transaction for few few days ... :D
And mostly from Bitcoin Wallet (Android) :)

But I really like Bitcoin Core and for me downloading a blockchain is only 2 days ... with 60mb transfer and 20gb is like a ... typical game installation in those times so it is not "huge" like some of the people say ... :)

And you are securing the network and you are gaining a % from a Bitcoin Father's energy :D Satoshi!! I know you are with us!!! Take care and thanks for the BTCeat :D

Regards.

Maybe armory is better now, but i was using it till last month, when i faced big issues. I had corrupted data and i couldn't access my funds in no way. I had all backups needed and i managed to redownload whole blockchain and restored my wallet but balance was 0, blockchain was showing correct ammount, in the end i had to import private keys on blockchain and totally delete Armory, install other software and send my funds from blochain to that new wallet software.

Do you really need the constant download of the blockchain? I used to use the original QT client but ever since I used electrum I fell in love. The passphrase is just so convenient rather than keeping track of a wallet.dat file.

use electrum or multibit
i have good experience with those wallet ;D
it didn't download full size blockchain like qt or armory does

for delivers all change (after spending) back to my MAIN address, i think electrum can do it

There's nothing wrong with the plain Bitcoin-QT as long as you have a very strong pass-phrase.

If you want ultimate security do a true offline storage that never touches the net like Armory and a receive only wallet.

For a lightweight desktop wallet (no downloading the blockchain), I love Electrum. Since you are not particularly concerned with privacy, this may be a good choice for you.

Well, I use bitcoin-qt to collect signature payment.

So each 17th I cry when I need to re-sync one month.
Multibit is nice, but may be confusing for noobs, if you take seriously the one address for every bitcoin move stuff.

A vote for Electrum here. Don't store large amounts of BTC in it though. Just us it for everyday spending.

Use cold storage for your savings. There are plenty of guides.

I like electrum because I can write down 12 words that will recover my wallet no matter how badly I mess up my hardware. It's foolproof if you write down the 12 word seed and easy to use, too.

Hmm...that's sad to hear but i'm happy that you managed to get these funds out, i never had problem like that. Luckily.

I like multibit. It isn't necessary for you to sync blockchain constantly unless you want to use the full features. Not really needed unless you are a developer.

Hello,
I am very satisfied of multibit wallet which is very fast and secure, but a minus if bultibit is that you cannot make paper wallets with it, which means if your machine crashes your BTC are gone.

Just to clarify on this, Electrum offers you the choice of whether you want to make use of a change address or not. I personally do not, but it is enabled by default for those who want it.

@OP: Personally, I fail to understand why you would want to use Qt, it's somewhat annoying to have to let it update the blockchain before you can send out a tx. But if you have the internet speed to not have to wait hours for your blockchain to update, and you don't mind backing up your wallet every 100 txs then it's fine to use. I don't like having to continually update my backups so I don't use Qt anymore.

If you're an advanced user I suggest multibit on a Linux partition with GUI.

Why gone? you can allways have backup of your private keys which you can import to blockchain for example.

If you are using the latest version 0.9.2.1, you can enable coin control (Settings->Options->Wallet->Enable coin control features) and put your main address as your "Custom change address" in the "Send" tab. :)

Oh awesome!
Maybe I can continue with (the updated version of) Qt after all.
But does this also solve the problem that Light mentioned:

...and you don't mind backing up your wallet every 100 txs...

In other words, if I change the settings mentioned by Domino, can I just write down (in a safe place) my main address public and private key (which would then be my only address, even if I receive change) and not have to worry about backing up Qt after every 100 transactions?

With Qt Wallet you don't have to be worried about Ram, It's the hard drive space it takes to store the blockchain.
As on date the blockchain takes 22.6 gig of space in my hard drive. So, do consider that before installing.

Maybe it's verifying blocks or you have too much connections. Mine uses most of the CPU.

Just curious, how many connections do you have (I assume you have forwarded ports to allow incoming connections)?

My ram is pretty much used up when the blocks finished syncing, however, when you are syncing, the CPU usage would be higher. I have set mine to 40 and is quite stable, have not yet to rise the limit. 1GB is enough for a bitcoin core.

Multibit, been using it from start.

I've never used multibit. Doesn't it run on java? I try to avoid that, I just have this weird hatred towards desktop java apps. Electrum is built using my favorite language, python. :)
