Title: How much BTC do you need to be in the Top 100? 1,000? 10,000? 100,000?
Post by: Lorenzo on July 16, 2014, 10:58:02 AM
Does anyone know the exact numbers?

For example, you might need a balance of 1,000 BTC to be in the top 100, 10 BTC to be in the top 10,000, etc.

Note the above is just a random guess. I'm interested in finding the real numbers. It would be fascinating to see how my address containing 0.3 BTC stacks up compared to the other addresses in the Bitcoin community.

You will never get true numbers because of Bitcoin's pseudonymity. The best you can do would be a randomized sample of the Bitcoin population and extrapolate from there. But that is probably easier said than done, as a large part of the user base wouldn't want to participate in that.

Not sure if this (http://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses.html) is legit or not, but according to that site:

Top 1: 151,497 BTC ($93,074,379 USD)
Top 10: 53,019 BTC ($32,572,739 USD)
Top 100: 10,000 BTC ($6,143,629 USD)
Link: http://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses.html (http://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses.html)

Top 1,000: 1,251 BTC ($768,783 USD)
Link: http://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses-10.html (http://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses-10.html)

Top 10,000: 106.80 BTC ($65,611 USD)
Link: http://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses-100.html (http://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses-100.html)

Unfortunately, it seems to end at page 100. And the private keys to many of these addresses could be lost or owned by Satoshi. It might be possible to calculate the balance required to get into the top 100,000 by using the table at the top of the page but the maths to do so would be pretty complicated.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that it is possible that a single person could own multiple addresses. And a single address can also house the funds of multiple people (e.g. an exchange's address).

Interesting. I would have expected the numbers to be a lot lower than that. :(

So if you have 1 BTC, then you are part of the Top 323,130 since 208,406 + 99,800 + 13,390 + 1,434 + 98 + 2 = 323,130.

It assumes that everyone would hold all of their savings in a single address which is a pretty wild assumption.

You need to "buyBTCpls."  ;)

If you are expecting people to just give them too you (based on your user name) I think you will just end up disappointed. It seems people are less likely to part with Bitcoin than even cash.  Many know how much they could be or should be worth.

The site obviously doesn't take Mark Karpeles into account...

To be in top 100 you must have more of 10.000 Bitcoin !

in Top 1000 you must have around 1300 Bitcoin :)

You are guaranteed to be in the top 100 if you have more than 1% of the 13 million available bitcoins, or more than 130,000 BTC.

In the top ...If you have ...
100130,000
1,00013,000
10,0001,300
100,000130
1,000,00013

But because of the skew towards the top, the necessary amounts are probably actually much less.
