This is great news, but I don't think Dell is that great. I recently browsed their website to try build a new PC but their selection wasnt very good and was quite expensive.

Just talke to their support group..  Like all the other guys US only for now.  They will update when that changes.  Or sorry I should .com for now.. I asked about .ca and they said they would update.

I MIGHT.. just MIGHT be able to convicne my company to hold BTC as we buy from dell...  .ca will have to accept it and I have my doubts but.. just maybe.

I just called then to confirm. It is true. As of yesterday you can use bitcoin for purchases on their website. The only restriction is that you can't split the bill between BTC and other payment methods.

This is really great news, dell are a monster.  And im in double figures for lifetime computers bought from dell.  Also very big suppliers to businesses.

More exposure is good, but I'd prefer the news if it was a company I actually like.  Dell are awful.  I'd never use them regardless of the payment method they offer.  Got a friend who's been waiting several weeks for a refund from them of over £600 because they're an incompetent company.

Probably every office I've ever seen or place I've worked at used Dell computers.  I haven't used them as a personal computer, but as higher end professional workstations, I think they work great.  This is huge news for bitcoin, should give some good momentum going into the next few months.

If your so worried, move your coins to an exchange and then make the payment from there so you can be tracked. Otherwise, go back to wearing your foil hat tin man

Price is already going up a bit on coinbase.  This and the Chicago btc conference could be a big weekend for btc!!

I wonder how long Amazon can now stay away from Bitcoin. They will be losing money and market share by the day.

The stick has two ends. The acceptance of BTC will grow in parallel with the increasing legal regulations and taxation from the government authorities.

The only problem I see is all these companies starting from OverStock, TigerDirect to DELL are accepting Bitcoin only for their US operation. What is point of accepting a global currency for a specific country ?

The answer is - "publicity".

The news will make a bigger impact on the Dell shares price then on a BTC price.

I could see the floodgates opening with this. With Dell's stamp of approval, amazon cannot be far behind now, can it?

Going all in with a brand new payment system would not be a wise business decision in my opinion.  Obviously they are going to test it out in the US first to make sure its worth their while, then I'm sure they will roll out international options.

I dont see this realy affecting bitcoin price too much.
Dell will only use payment processor like coinbase, and dump bitcoins as soon as they get them.
Its good that the options are widening, but i doubt the price will go up much.. were still a long way from the trend we had in december.

I am glad to see more hardware vendors accepting Bitcoin. It will help grow the Bitcoin economy and that can only be a plus for all of us.

How long is apple going to take now until they start accepting too?

because when you roll out with something new, you use some test markets until you feel more secure with how everything works. once you're more comfortable that it won't destroy or adversely affect your business, you can take it worldwide.

Most of the companies I have worked with always buy dells. As more companies like this accept bitcoins, then companies that purchase their equipment via Dell will  be able to keep some of their bitcoin sales for making purchases.

I also tend to tell family to buy a Dell when they ask me what kind of computer to buy. Sure I could give them an idea of the best hardware out there and what gives the best speed and performance, etc. But when it comes to just a simple computer that you can use to surf the web and open M$ Office documents, Dell does what it needs to do.

Yup, this is amazing.  I suspect a bit of a domino effect with other major vendors hoping on the band wagon as well, especially after dell publishes their Q1 bitcoin related earnings ;)  I hope Micheal just decides to hold onto a good portion of them.

Basically accepting bitcoin for online computer retailers is no longer a competitive advantage but rather a necessity to survive.

From its' birth, Apple never tested other's shoe. It built its own hardware to run its own OS. Apple machines can still be serviced only by Apple. So I think, Apple will roll out its own coin that'll run only on Apple hardware by Apple software. This is how they'll compete the ASIC business ;)

Don't buy it. Just use the news to your benefit in how Bitcoin is changing the landscape of commerce.

If you do not buy stuff then you are okay.  Not sure what the problem is. Another large retailer is accepting Bitcoin which just made your Bitcoins worth a lot more.

Huge news! Another major company on the band wagon. Hopefully Apple gets in soon as well. 2014 is a watershed year for bit coin.

This is awesome news! I'm waiting Microsoft and other bigger companies to step ahead now. Bitcoin's success is inevitable, every company will adopt in years. First adopters take market advantage. ;)

Again, dont bet on Microsoft and Apple. They'll release their own coin before accepting Bitcoin on their platform.

I don't think any company coin will success in even mid-term. You can't trust centralized systems, they don't have any difference than paper money or bank account numbers. I think at some time even the biggest companies can't deny this success and adopt Bitcoin eventually.

Great news, I think in all honesty anything that shows Bitcoin holds real life value does nothing but good for it. Can't wait till they roll this out across the globe.

Value is a function of purchasing power. You add a new place to use that purchasing power and it becomes worth more. Exchange rates are merely snapshots in time that don't always reflect the true value of something.

They're talking about Dell spying on you.  Even as far back as 2005 (https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20050530/2333212.shtml), there have been controversies.  Wouldn't surprise me if they're sill doing it.  Chances are most companies do it, but it's one of those things people generally don't care enough about to find out and shop elsewhere.

Nope, they were doing good, a cashcow, but not growing in terms of revenue. So Michael Dell with the help of some PE took DELL private, to re-invent the company. This is a good start.

At no point in DELL's history were they going out of business.

When i saw this news i was like wow wtf this is rly big news.

Dell is rly reputable company and when company like that starts accepting btc its rly good for bitcoin and will make many other company's starting to think about it .
It won't affect the price ofc but it will affect overall acceptance of btc. Which is rly good news.

i still find it hard to believe that dell still has such ugly designs.. their laptops were like this over 10+ years ago. but still, the xps 13 line is quite sexy to me at least.

Dell is doing pretty good.... although their competitors are shutting down (Sony Vaio for example). However, the overall demand for Desktops / Laptops is going down, as most of the people are now preferring Androids and Tablets.

Hopefully we will see a reversal of this trend with people using bitcoin to buy computers.

The supposed "spyware" is their Help Center software that they use when the average PC user calls support about something they can't do in Windows. It's basically a remote access, which you can deny them accessing your PC when the dialogue pops up, similar to LogMeIn. It makes sense for them to have it, since customer service is their #1 priority and edge over the competition. Not to mention, it can easily be uninstalled. If you know enough about computers to uninstall it then you'll probably never need the Help Center anyways.

That is insane. Dell.com, accepting bitcoin. I was actually thinking of buying a monitor last month with bitcoin from newegg, by converting it and exchanging it to paypal or something, and now I can directly just get the monitor off of dell  with no money lost from exchanges.

Definitely good news, though. I've never been a fan of their computers, but I hear good things about some of their other products, so maybe I will look into them some more.

No I was going to purchase the monitor with paypal, and fund the paypal account with bitcoins converted from exchanges and such.

There are so many people selling amazon giftcards, on this forum, on purse.io, and gyft.com sells them as well.  All of them sell for a discount...  so IMHO amazon already accepts bitcoin.  If they were to officially accept bitcoin, it would probably be first in the U.S., and that wouldn't really do anything other than promote bitcoin through media, because of all these places selling amazon gift cards for BTC.

I dont know if the community will agree with me. I feel, rather than snatching big players, adding new players who buy & sell in Bitcoin is more important to the Bitcoin economy. Dish Network to DELL Computers, none will hold Bitcoin. They'll get paid in Bitcoin and dump it in the market to convert it in FIAT. Bitcoin startups wont most likely be doing this...

Yes this is exciting now, but when more and more merchants accept btc, the effect of Breaking News headlines will wear off, and eventually it'll just be a normal thing.

Why they are limiting Bitcoins only for Alienware purchases? I would have considered them if they accepted the same for XPS / Inspiron. Alienware is far too expensive for me. (Anyway I can't use Bitcoin on their site, as they are currently accepting BTC only from users within the United States).

Well actually that is a good point as well the big ones will likely just keep dumping in the sense that they will convert directly to fiat the positive spinoff though is that if some new merchants need to be convinced someone can throw a few big names now that accept Bitcoin as examples that its a far more interesting system.

The shadow of Mtgox collapsing is still a specter and needs to be removed one way or another so that positive spin is helpful in the end.

That's great! They used to be known as an overpriced business/AOL-consumer hardware provider, but they actually build some decent products. I've heard a lot of people rave about their monitors. They're really supposed to be a valid alternative to Apple Cinema Displays, for example!

Their monitors are the best. They have very cheap very good quality consumer monitors (I am currently on a s2340l as I am typing this), and they also have the best professional photo/video editing monitors.

yeah i was going to buy one of their refurbished IPS monitors, but mine started working again magically. i always hear these great things about those dell monitors, but i guess i don't need it now.

I have two monitors from Dell that I bought refurbished in 2008 and they still work quite well as additional displays for my iMac. My old Dell laser printer is still chuffing along quite capably as well. When I do eventually replace them I will probably go Dell again just because they beat Apple into the bit coin universe.   

Been on two Dell IPS monitors since 2010 and they still work great. They do make some great monitors, although I think the OEM panels are from LG. I don't think Dell actually makes any of their parts inhouse. The only gripe I have with these monitors is that in this day and age, there were no HDMI  :-\

I can't vouch for any of their mainstream consumer PCs though. Those are generally crap parts inside.

Yea mine is 1080p IPS 23 inch glossy. Its a beauty. Sad thing is it came with a VGA cable.

I don't think this can be overstated. A company with nearly $60 billion in revenue implemented an entirely new payment system and has it up and running in 14 days. Mostly everyone has heard that Bitcoin can save on credit card processing fees but not everyone knows just how easy it is to implement and use.

I hope that either Tigerdirect or Newegg starts paying Dell in Bitcoin for some of their B2B purchases. That would be huge.

Actual serious question here: how is this helpful to anybody except those who already own Bitcoin? Unless you presume that the price of Bitcoin will constantly rise, that is. Otherwise, how is this functionally better from using a credit card?

Sure, you're safe from CC theft... because the burden of securing your financial information has been shifted from a credit card company or bank to yourself, which most people do not want and can not competently do. And that's basically the only possible "benefit" I can see.

I agree.  If you knew what big companies pay to secure their credit card-holder data, and all the PCI obligations that come with it, you see that this in and of itself is huge!

I think you've got the question back to front.  How is a currency that no one accepts useful to anyone?  These are all small steps to something much bigger, but people generally won't see the benefit for a while yet.  It's going to be helpful to people who may need an alternative to cash and cards at some point (and the likelihood of that is increasing by the day in most places).  The more vendors that accept Bitcoin, the more useful it becomes.  It also helps create positive awareness, because anyone who bought the poorly researched stories about Bitcoin being some sort of elaborate scam now have evidence to the contrary.

It's sad how most of the ppl don't see new vendors as good thing in BTC world. Yes, short term, it can brig price down (early adopters start using their BTC) but in long term, it spreads BTC around (from early adopters to rest of population) and it attracts aditional users which in turn rais price long term.

The challenge will be persuading the 70% of Bitcoin HODLers to actually spend their coins.

No stupid fck, as the price of btc rise, the more btc will be spent and distributed. This is why "bubble" is healthy in the early stage of adoption. I expect btc will have 2-3 more bubbles b4 going mainstream.

Great news.. Inclusion of Big players like Dell will definitely change people's mind bitcoin's future. 

They might accept after some months or some years. Maybe, we all community members should mail them about adding BTC. ::)

I think that the point when apple accepts bitcoin for everything (app store, itunes, products), and once companies like paypal create their own solution for it (like being able to convert btc to usd in the paypal account just like any other currency), thats when it will be mainstream and used by the world.

Dell also sells other useful things, not JUST their computers (which you can like or hate at your whim)...
Tempted to buy an Xbox One from them...with bitcoin...because I can. And yes, I just followed "useful things" up with video games.

And those saying how is it better than a credit card since I have to give my address / name still?

With a credit card I give you my name, my shipping address (includes zip code), and my credit card number, and allow you to PULL money from me. And in doing so, you have everything you need to pull more of my money in the future without me knowing (until the bill comes in or the alarms go off)

With Bitcoin I give you my name, my shipping address, and then I PUSH money to you. And you can never touch my money again. Even if they're hacked, they may get my name and address, but my money is still mine.

That is the biggest and most important difference. You're never giving the access to your money away, you're simply sending money to them.
Credit cards, checks, they all have the necessary information to get more of your money if someone wants to be devious enough. Bitcoin doesn't.

When apple starts to accept bitcoin for things like it's app store and itunes it will likely serve as some kind of wallet service as they would want to guarantee that they get paid and so they can avoid issues with a TX never confirming. This would greatly reduce the stress on their customer service team if they have a lower number of TXs going to them.

I think all of the companies like apple, amazon, and ebay/paypal would have to develop their own payment receiving solution. If there would be one that everyone uses, it would be probably created by paypal.
