Title: Which of these 2 laptops would you pick ?
Post by: Rnbin on July 19, 2014, 12:37:20 AM
Hi, I want to buy a new laptop and campus offers 2 models at a fairly good price (compared to the shop price in my country). The Lenovo is 749 eur, the Toshiba 729 eur. These are the models:

Lenovo Z50-70-01418
15,6", Intel Core i7-4510U, 8GB, 1TB SSHD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 840M, DVD
(processor has got 2 cores and clock speed of 2 GHz and boost 3.1 GHz; and has SSHD and full HD)
http://www.campusshop.be/zcs-01/80032282/lenovo-z50-70-01418/details.aspx

Toshiba Satellite L50-A-1C7
15,6", Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 8GB, 1TB, NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M, DVD
(processor has got 4 cores and clock speed of 2.4 GHz and boost 3.4 GHz; has HDD)
http://www.campusshop.be/zcs-01/80016052/toshiba-satellite-l50-a-1c7/details.aspx

(i'm sorry, couldn't find an english version of the site)

Specs look nearly the same, but I'm absolutely no expert when it comes to GPU and CPU so i'm not sure. I don't need a laptop for mining but I want a moderate/good performer on all levels (graphics and speed; gaming and basic programs...). Which laptop looks like the best buy ? Which one looks like the best performer and which of these 2 brands is the most recommended in general ?

Thanks in advance !

I'd go with the Toshiba myself. I used to use a Toshiba laptop a while back and I never had trouble with it. It's got the better processor of the two as well, plus it's a bit cheaper than the Lenovo.

I have not used either brand but Toshiba one looks good as it has slightly better specs from the Lenovo one plus I think Toshiba brand is more subtle and durable.

The toshiba has a more powerful CPU but the Lenovo has a slightly better GPU + the battery will last longer since the cpu consume half of the toshiba

I think would also prefer Toshiba, I think it has higher cpu power. I would also prefer more on Japanese made than Chinese made for now.

Wow, wasn't expecting so much responses :) it was all very helpful ! I think Toshiba is the clear winner, it was my first choice aswell. Was only considering Lenovo because i read on a few sites that this brand scores better than Toshiba, but other sites mention the opposite so... Gonna go for Toshiba.

Thank you all very much !

Go with Toshiba I would as it should have a better batery life and the other things which people have mentioned. Lenovo probably does score better because it a whole I think they are run by a better company.

Depends if you trust the Japanese not to put NSA spy gadgets inside the Toshiba laptop since they are allied with the US.

I prefer 4 cores but I have some Lenovo's and work perfectly.
All the computers that I've used with 4 cores are better than the ones with 2 and for me It's very important...

mmm... IMAO, Toshiba is not as good as Lenovo nowadays but they're both ok.

There is not much difference in specification so it all comes down to brand and I'll choose Toshiba over Lenovo on any given day.

Reason :-

Toshiba is Japanese
Lenovo is Chinese

Toshiba one, because i7-4700MQ way better than i7-4510U
you can compare them here :
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/laptop.html
U in i7-4510U means Ultra/Lower Performance Processor (Than M series), good for Ultrabook so that processor don't drain your battery
M for performance.
i'm sure GT840M is better than GT740M, but it won't make huge difference in gaming and real life use
SSHD (SSD + HDD hybrid) is faster than traditional HDD
but you can upgrade it anytime, not like processor ;D

Yes Japanese brand, but i saw many of Toshiba laptops made in China :P
especially in Asia Pacific markets

Both are good, although I'm not sure if it's that great of a deal, why not get a desktop computer?
I would go with the Toshiba, I've owned 2 and they were pretty decent.  It's got better processing speed of the 2 as well.

That doesn't matter much though many parts of Apple and Samsung products are manufactured in China, but you can feel the difference.

i have a lenovo laptop, and while it's nice overall, i don't like the design.. it's a copy of the macbooks, except it's almost the size of a 14" while only having a 13.3" display. if it were better designed to make it the size of a normal 13.3" ultrabook, i'd be really happy with it overall.

Thank you all again for the great advise here, I just ordered the Toshiba one, apparently the price should have been 800 eur but got it for 730 eur due to mistake on the site. I think it's already posted to my home so am hoping they can't undo the order anymore  :P . I picked the Toshiba one because (besides the fact it has no full HD and an HDD) the overal performance just looked better and think most here agreed with that.

Make sure you get an SSD. You don't want anything but an SSD for a hard disk. Believe me, there's nothing better than having an SSD. It's not a lot faster, it's a whole universe faster.
Also, people I know had bad experiences with Toshiba. I'd stick with Lenovo if I were you!

Does SSD only improve the access speed of programs (so i mean solely the speed of starting up a program) or does it improve the speed of a program afterwards aswell

Ah.  Sorry if I missed this, but what will you do on the computer?  Will it just be for casual browsing on the internet, or hardcore gaming, or what?  If it's just casual browsing, you actually don't need that good of a computer.  But like I said, the Toshiba IMO would be better because of its processing speed.

You obviously didn't feel the difference of having a machine with 2 min boot time and one with 15 seconds boot time (measured with Soluto). I'd always go for the one with a faster disk, unless the specifications of the other one are way better.

Well, programs do need to access additional data form time to time so there's that. But the thing is, disks get fragmented over time, you can't do anything about that, not even defragment them will alleviate that completely. SSDs don't care, because they have no physical access time. They stay as fast as they ever were. And yeah, you can improve booting up your machine from 2-3 minutes to about 15 seconds. Definitely. They're the best.

Need a trustworthy laptop for my thesis (mine right now just shuts down itself randomly and gets overheated fast) in the first place, and also need multiple heavy programs to run properly and not crash, my €400 laptop didn't succeed at this so wanted to push the price of the next one a bit. I expect this one to do multiple (heavy) tasks without losing on me. Quadcore was a superior choice over dualcore for that reason (or at least it was in the point of view of this layman :) )

I had to pick between HDD and SSHD (SSD is too expensive for me at this point), doesn't SSHD have same issues with fragmentation (since all data is saved on HDD with this SSHD) ? Booting up time is no real issue for me, neither is gaining a few seconds when starting up a program. To me it's important programs work efficiently without having to max the CPU capabilities anymore.
If HDD really starts to bother me I can always upgrade to SSD in the future when it'll be cheaper :) but am expecting to be fine with the HDD by now. Thanks for the additional info

Like I said, SSDs fragment as well, but they don't care since they have no physical access time. What slows down an HDD? The read/write head has to wait until the desired place on the disk comes by. SSDs just access the data, nothing has to move! The hard disk is the bottleneck of practically all computers nowadays. It's the single thing that slows a machine down. Significantly. My SSD laptop just suffered a mainboard failure and I'm now stuck on a regular machine for the time being, and suddenly I notice how I start scream when something takes 10 seconds to open. Totally forgot about that crap.

Yet many still don't realize just how big the difference is. You lose so much time when booting a computer, I've actually stopped booting and don't restart for weeks. While my laptop (even after loading it with a ton of programs on start-up, which are needed) needs 20 seconds to boot completely.

Exactly. And people don't get the 'it's a lot faster' thing. They're thinking along the lines of 'yeah it's a bit faster' or something. An SSD is the single item that makes your computer 10 times as fast. If not more. You'll NEVER want to go back. And the best thing: The computer stays that fast.

(i'm sorry, couldn't find an english version of the site)

Specs look nearly the same, but I'm absolutely no expert when it comes to GPU and CPU so i'm not sure. I don't need a laptop for mining but I want a moderate/good performer on all levels (graphics and speed; gaming and basic programs...). Which laptop looks like the best buy ? Which one looks like the best performer and which of these 2 brands is the most recommended in general ?

Thanks in advance !

I had two toshiba laptops so far, nothing but the best about them,
even the specs are a bit better on toshiba than they are on dell.
If i may ask, why 15,6'' ? Doesnt that seam too small, or do you prefer smaller screens due to lower weight ?!

I`d pick a toshiba, a friend had it for 2 years until he starting dl porn.

Haha, so what happened then? Do Toshiba laptops break when you download that kind of stuff? That's strayyynge man! They shouldn't even be able to tell what you're doing with them, they're machines!

In my opinion most branded windows laptops or computers come with a lot of bloatware.

This won't harm you in the short term , but they will slow down your computer needlessly in the long run.

It is best to delete all the bloatware (Basically , useless software included with your computer when you take it out of the box) when you buy a new laptop , as it gets harder to do it later without removing useful programs.

A handy guide I'd suggest is this : http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos/howto_get_rid_bloatware_your_new_laptop
A word of warning, use it only if you just bought your laptop and didn't install anything yet.

It doesn't really matter whether you take the Toshiba or the Lenovo , they will be a fraction of their real speed with bloatware (But I personally think the Toshiba looks better).

Another viable option is to get laptops with lesser or no bloatware , but they are harder to find.
Quick googling leads to quite a few lists like this : http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2329276,00.asp

TLDR; The Toshiba is better , but be sure to remove bloatware or go for another bloatware free laptop

Personally, I would always stick with apple. If your a microsoft person, it takes awhile to get a hang of it but in the end, it is much smoother.

Typical Apple user - between a choice of 2 cheaper Windows laptop, he advises the expensive ass Apple laptop

No offense but Apple computers make me want to put a gun to my head and blow my brains out. Personally I love Microsoft and will never see it any other way. You may think that I am closing my eyes to the other side of the situation, that is right. I don't  care about Apple, I wouldn't eat them, Sam I am.

Also, I'd choose the second computer.

Does downloading porn damage the toshiba?  :)
If it did they would be out of business by now :D

I'd go with the Toshiba, don't think the SSD would effect performance as much as the better clock speed

Neither. The thread was started 6 months ago and they are both obsolete (as far as new laptops are concerned).
