Title: [2014-07-20] Beware of ‘ransomware’ demanding Bitcoin payment

In my last column we talked about a particularly nasty form of “ransomware” that had started spreading toward the end of last year called Cryptolocker. Cryptolocker is a virus that scans your computer and holds your files “ransom” in exchange for a payment that has to be made using Bitcoin. Since that column came out there is a mobile virus that has started spreading that targets the Android mobile operating system

I guess it would depend on whether or not the virus has a chance to encrypt the drive before the antivirus can act. Once your computer is infected, it is already too late because no antivirus would be able to defeat the encryption. But if the virus is detected early enough, the antivirus could delete it before it starts encrypting your files.

Ugh, I had no idea android phones could get viruses. I was just about to buy one but I'm not too sure now. Can it completely lock your phone?

I am sure there are viruses that can. I know there are haters on this forum but the iPhone is probably the safest. All of the apps are pre-screened and tested. If you are holding bitcoin on your mobile device you want a walled garden for sure.

Android you really have to be careful. Usually the play store is trustworthy, but I would never store bitcoin on my phone. Never EVER download APKs if you don't fully trust them. There is no reason to anyways, as pretty much everything is on the play store.
