Title: How easy is it to sell a domain name?
Post by: Bitcoinbikers on July 22, 2014, 08:28:01 PM
I'd like to find out some opinions on whether or not its worth it to register a tonne of bitcoin related domains to sell?

What has been your experience in the domain selling business?

Please check out my domains also https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=701443.msg7927455#msg7927455 :)

You're unlikely to make much money from it.  You can name a company anything and still use bitcoin.  Unless you're running an exchange or a website explaining how to use bitcoin for new users, then having the word 'bitcoin' in your company name is almost as cheesy as having 'internet' or 'cyberspace' in it.  There just won't be much demand for it.  People (for the most part anyway) have learned from the mistakes of the dotcom bubble.

Fucking domain name squatters can kiss my ass.

With all the TLDs out there, I can always find a domain name I need without needing to pay a fucking squatter.

I agree with the first two posters, and I will point out the obvious.  If a bitcoin domain was worth anything for resale, it would have been purchased already.

Respectfully disagree.

Since the rise of the .io domains, the domainers are fuckd for tech-related cyber-squatting...

I don't think a lot of people like domain squatters they purchase a certain name in bulk and try to sell it for more than it's worth but someone might want that name for a actual project its actually really irritating.

that's their business model.  but most names are never sold... they simply squat on the domains... and maybe sell a few of them which makes up for the rest.  they just have to make a little more on the good names than the annual fees for the bad names... occasionally let go of names for cheaper than what they paid if there is no interest in several years.

OP, I took a look at your domain names, honestly none of them are very desirable.

Dam, I've been hoping to get my hands on a name like bitcoinwallets.com which sold for like 200,000. I nearly got my hands on bitcoin.exchange but mt.gox have the trademark rights to the term "bitcoin" so was unsuccessful :(

So the only way to make these domains worth anything is to build a site that generates a lot of traffic?

I would say that it is not very difficult to sell, as all you would need to change is the registration on the domain registrar.

I do however doubt that you would be able to sell your domain for any meaningful amount as there are so many permutations of possible domains that someone could simply register another domain if the one they want is not available.

Yes, but then you're selling the site, not just the domain obviously.

If you want to buy and sell domain only, you have to probably invest thousands into a name that's actually good... and hold it for years and hope you can sell it for more.
