Title: Why bitcoin conferences will never get me to come...
Post by: gweedo on July 24, 2014, 09:24:34 PM
Conferences are becoming the overcompensation shows. I never once said to myself let me check out a conference. I think I would come back even dumber. Just like the entertainment business, that needs to pat themselves on the back every 5 minutes, so does bitcoin need that as well. How about instead of conferences individual companies in different states host meet ups for developers, small business and individuals. That is how we grow, and not from these stupid conferences where no innovation is being shown off.

I agree. Just a pointless dog and pony show.

I don't quite agree. Reading news online and exchanging ideas on forums and alike are great. But still nothing really compares to a nice and vivid talk between 2 people who are into the same matter. Meeting other people in person adds a whole new layer to Bitcoin and makes it more real.

But the question is? Must we? Conferences are for special types of people and majority of bitcoin enthusiasts are not that type.

Well I believe many of the faction who are interested in technology and 'Computers' aren't. But those who are entrepreneurs and/or work in the financial areas, actually love those conferences.
On a side note: Ever been to a big IT conference/exhibition/show?  ;)

yep in 80's used to do the big comdex thing in vegas every year

if it wasn't in vegas I wouldn't have gone

now early 80's I used to do the adult expo in vegas had some adult stuff going on

those were FUN

I remember Johnny Holmes seeing my drop dead gorgeous 2nd wife

He says

This your lady?

I say yep, he says lucky man.

Honestly the only woman I ever met so beautiful it would take your breath away

Too bad she couldn't produce seed, had a full hysterectomy at 12 so no womb, poor thing

So when I hit 30 I had to say bye and she knew TIME TO BREED

But that was only woman I ever met who made my eyes not wander, even at a porno convention

haha

You completely missed my point. I am saying that it has been nothing about sharing ideas and more about showing off.

I disagree. I just came back from a bitcoin conference in Chicago and was pleasantly surprised. Have you been to a conference? Or are you just assuming what is, or is not, happening? This is a great way for all walks of life involved in bitcoin to get together and achieve a variety of goals, whether that be to learn more about it, invest in it, develop innovative ideas, discuss these ideas, meet people, collaborate together to accomplish goals and game-changing visions, gain merchants, view/test new bitcoin technology, etc. I do not think that conferences are all about showing off what-so-ever, it truly is to build upon and better bitcoin, educate people, and spread awareness.

I recognise your description well. It absolutely applies to business and sales network shows. At this stage the BTC ones still have strong undercurrents of education as CK points out in his post above.

Conferences are great!

You get your employer to pick up the tab for a week of beer and babes and sight-seeing in another city.

Just be careful what you tweet or the boss may find out.

Yeah, after hearing about it from a few people who went on those, I have no plans of going.
It's okay as a meetup for people from the forum or who know each other online because of crypto, but it's definitely not going to make me smarter.

They should go around introduce themselves to small business and developers, then they would help the overall community. Talking why bitcoin is good to a bunch of people that love bitcoin is not going to do much, at least that is what I think.

Conferences, just like training is only good to catch up with friends.  Like it is meant to just be a fun thing...

I have been to some early conferences where it was what you are describing, but from all the videos I have seen and the companies that actually go, I see no innovation, no education and just everyone trying to show off.

Self-employed and millionaire... I get to do that on company time all the time...

Glad some someone agrees.

I agree we are still extremely small.

I see why people want to do that, but you can do that anytime I think.

After attending Miami at the beginning of this year, it was neat to meet many of the different faces within the BTC space.  However, I like doing local meetups much more.  It was very financially taxing to go, it was a great experience, but it wasn't that much better than just doing my local meetup group.

Consider the following:   1 meetup group organization cost = $75 dollars.  That gives you the abillity to organize a local event with other folks who may be interested in sharing conversations about that topic.

1 trip and conference ticket = $500 at bare minimum.  Travel, Hotel, Rental or Cab Fare, Food Expenses, Chicago was reasonable in terms of ticket prices - most everywhere else is trying to rob everyone with tickets at 250+ USD which is retarded for someone who is 'new' and just wants an idea of what its about.
