Is this the most shares anybody's ever seen or have there been larger?

It may be the biggest ever but that is kind of meaningless is the difficulty is expecting to keep increasing for the next year.  It may very well be near 100 billion next year and the solve you noted would be commonplace.  The question is how many times difficulty did it peak.  I think I have seen some blocks that were nearly 11x difficulty before last year back when we were still in the millions.

I'm pretty sure from memory that deepbit once had a block that was 18x difficulty. By today's standards that would have taken ~335 billion shares.

Slush is up to 115,748,910,176 and counting in their current round.  Won't be much longer to pass the amounts mentioned in this thread for EMC and Discus Fish.

Yep, that's the one I'm talking about on Ozcoin.  11.79 times difficulty.  A lot of users ran away from Ozcoin when that happened because of the hack and another nasty block a day earlier.  People will do irrational things out of fear sometimes (as if you can escape bad luck).

if Deepbit had an 18x block, that would be pretty darn painful.  It's before my time (2011).
