Title: Ful node is vanishing
Post by: nuxicoin on July 29, 2014, 03:10:00 PM
The number of full node is decrease from 7400 to 7200 in 60 days
See https://getaddr.bitnodes.io/dashboard/?days=60
Anyone has some idea to make a incentive policy for full node existance?

You do realize that these numbers are just an estimate, right? Thats just the number of notes that are reachable from a certain point.

Fullnodes need to be incentivized otherwise they will become a liability to the entire network. Bitcoin cannot rely on the assumption that there will be altruistic users running fullnodes.

I would predict that this will eventually happen, especially as the nodes start to process many more TX per second then they do now.

Full nodes do have an incentive.  The incentive is they are an independent equal peer on the network and can't be spoofed, tricked, or need to rely on a "trusted" third parties.  Our company runs six full nodes and it isn't for altruistic reasons.

7400 to 7200 is measurement noise. This isn't to say that we don't need more reachable full nodes run by diverse parties... but this particular datapoint isn't especially interesting. Lowering the cost of running full nodes is certantly something that is actively being worked on.

How can a full node be a liability to the network? What do you mean ?

*cue movie trailer guy voice*
In a world where full nodes are too expensive for normal people...one government (or company, etc.) masquerades as thousands of "full nodes" that play by their own rules. Will the legitimate users be able to find anything other than the government nodes? Coming THIS SUMMER.
*end*

It's not that honest nodes are a liability. Assuming most/all full nodes will be honest nodes can be a liability, especially if you're an SPV client. Of course, the real trouble only starts when you are connected to 0 honest nodes, only dishonest ones (say, ones that run their own chain, and don't accept your transactions).

Not really sure what can be done to "incentivize" running nodes but honestly if you have Bitcoins, especially a significant amount, that in itself is reason to run a full node. Protect your investment and all that.

If i'm not mistaken, it only takes 2 nodes for the whole thing to run, so don't worry.
Must have been some power off in some chinese town block.
