They all have about the same amount of privacy (that is, none) if you don't take any extra precautions; there's https://protonmail.ch/ based out of Switzerland but I believe there's a line to get an account, plus it's only useful if you use it with other protonmail addresses since, say, if you send an email from there to a gmail account, Google still keeps an unsecured copy the NSA can get to.

There are some solutions to privacy over email, e.g. encryption (which the NSA is working hard to crack mind you), but it's very impractical for the average user; unless you're Snowden or Assange, it's probably not worth the effort.  You'd have to figure a secure way to trade keys with your recipient so you can encrypt each others emails, which of course gets complicated with people who don't see the point of doing so, or just don't have that kind of technical understanding.

Aside from that, gmail seems like the best choice for non-sensitive email: http://alternativeto.net/software/gmail/

Privacy is only needed for crook and people who deem important enough. Most users don't fit into this category.

I thought as much gmail is probably the best option and is probably the most stable without much downtime. I've tried outlook but didn't get on with that.

So when you where said "safer" what exactly did you have in mind? Better protection from hacks or better protection of your privacy?

For now, gmail is sufficient. Google could turn out to be extremely evil and snoopative (is that a word?) but for now they will do. Gmail is a great service.

If you buy a VPS, you need to trust the company hosting it.

I would NEVER trust anyone other than me to handle my privacy and neither should you, you should always use PGP to encrypt private emails and do the encryption on your PC (not using your providers server-side tools).

The email provider I use is https://unseen.is
They are based out of and hosted in Iceland and are OK although they lack the functionality of using "+" aliases in email addresses. I PGP encrypt anything sensitive so I do not need to trust them - the main driving factor behind choosing them was the cool domain...  ;D

Is there any email provider now that is based on tor? I saw some before but I havent tried it.

There was once tormail but that had a problematic faith, it was hosted on a server that also hosted kiddy porn sites so it was attacked by the FBI.

Due to the way email works running an email server on a Tor hidden service is pointless as the IP of the server or a gateway server has to be known in order to receive email.

You can use Tor with almost any email provider including gmail.

Create an anonymous email using tor in gmail how would they know it was you? Or better start using bit message.

Hard to beat Gmail if only for their excellent 2FA. 2FA sms is invaluable to me and it should be to you too. Nothing worse than getting your email or exchange accounts hacked when you are dabbling with btc and altcoins.

Find me another email service with 2FA as good as Gmail's.

Oh God, thanks for the laugh....ahh that was good.  That might have been Google's motto in 1999.  Nowadays I see them and Apple as the corporate behemoths who cowtoe to the US gov.

While email isn't ever secure with encryption, I trust Outlook with my privacy a little more.

For safety nothing is easier than Google 2FA though - a must have for exchanges.

Create an anonymous email using tor in gmail how would they know it was you? Or better start using bit message.

They may not allow you to use tor when registering.

Let us know if you are able to get this done.

We are using a strong encryption protocol called OpenPGP, with 4096 bits encryption keys to protect your data. To the best of publicly available information, there is no known method which will allow a person or group to break OpenPGP:s encryption by cryptographic or computational means.

This is useless. You are still relying on their word that they are actually encrypting your messages and not saving the original before encrypting it. There is no way you can know they don't do this without doing the encryption yourself.

You can PGP encrypt it on your PC before sending and eliminate this risk entirely - you can do this with ANY mail provider - no need to pay countermail for something you can't be sure they actually do.

Since there are various PGP software providers to choose from (GoAnywhere, Gpg4couwin etc)
Do you have a few you could recommend?

From what I understand those are just frontends, most of these use GnuPG as a backend which is the de-facto standard:

https://gnupg.org/

GnuPG is a command-line tool, so if you find it difficult to use you might want to install a frontend too or an email client that has plugins for it like thunderbird.

Frontends:
https://www.gnupg.org/related_software/frontends.html

thunderbird plugin:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/enigmail/

Not true.

Most people (like you) don't deem privacy important enough until its too late and your privacy has been violated in a very bad way. Once it happens to you you'll understand why privacy is incredibly important.

It's similar to health. There are a lot of people who do not care much about their health until they get very sick - then they realize your health is more important than anything else.

Buy a domain, buy a offshore vps or offshore hosting or use a spare pc in your home and become the email provider yourself.
This is not a good idea, there is no way in hell you can get this secure enough, even if you know what you're doing.
2nd problem is, most mail provider you send mails to will treat your mail as spam.

2nd problem is not true, it depends on your hosting ip. If your hosting ip is flagged as source of spam your email will be flagged, but if you are using clean hosting ip your ip won't be mark as spam.

I've just switched to https://posteo.de (https://posteo.de).

It's a small provider in berlin/germany. It's not free, but for 1 euro/month you don't get any ads.

Unfortunately I think you get lost on their website if you can't understand german.  :)

Those of you who are using Gmail and Facebook are just widening the massive database these companies and in turn the Govt. have for predicting your every move and probably your political affiliations. Every time your send or receive a message they are using powerful algorithms to determine as much as they can about you and those you are in contact with. Don't think that since you aren't "doing anything wrong" that there is no risk. These companies use this info to attempt to lead the public in subtle ways whether your are aware of it or not.

Gmail users are just adding to Google's coffers and widening the asymmetrical information gap between the corporate elite and  the rest of us.

Cut it out.....

If you don't want every tom, dick and harry reading your personal emails, you'd be best avoiding all the popular NSA friendly email providers (yahoo, gmail etc)

I think there is one called safemail.net, based in Israel, that's supposed to be one of the safest mail providers, but you never know :)

Zoho's free service is particularly useful if you want to use your own domain.

I logged into two Zoho accounts I abandoned at least two, three years ago. Nice they didn't delete my accounts for inactivity.

I had a slow connection at the time and really disliked the zoho interface. It took forever to load back then.

They have bumped up storage to 5 gigs and implemented 2FA. Sweet!

Still no ads. Sweet!
