Title: Best pure POS coin? (or alternative 'mining')
Post by: human on August 01, 2014, 04:21:54 PM
Let's compile a list if currently pure 100% POS coins and other coins with other methods to secure a distributed blockchain without POW.

I'll make the start:

Blackcoin
X15

NXT
Quora

Bitshares

Peershares? Is this real?

BitShares.

NODE does not exist AFAIK.

BitShares, they had mining at the beginning. Can not find quickly whether they are still doing POW and just talking/writing about DPOS... there is a lot of vaporware in cryptoland.

Hyperstake (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=678849.0) is 100% PoS

GreenBacks will be 100% POS when it comes out. Not going to try to persuade anyone into supporting it now, we'll let our ann and whitepaper do the talking for us.

BitShares is up and running DPOS, no mining.  During the funding phase you could mine Protoshares (PTS) which gave you a 50% stake in BitShares.  The other 50% came from Angelshares, people could fund directly instead of mining.  You can still mine PTS which gives you shares in future products beyond BTSX.

Last but not least the market based trading, think bitUSD, bitGold, bitSilver etc...

Let's talk Bitcoin! episode 129.  Starts around 12 minute mark with the lead dev Dan.  Great listen.

Well in my very biased and bigoted opinion, PoW does nothing but waste a fuck ton of electricity which regrettably is usually made by the burning of fossil fuels (or worse). PoS on the other hand, can be fully utilized on something as basic as a Raspberry Pi that can easily be solar powered for a 'reasonable' amount on money. I say reasonable in the sense that it would be insanely cost prohibitive to power a GPU card or ASIC via solar cells for generation of coins/network health.

You want to use crypto currency to change the world, its much more feasible to connect the world with pi's then a gpu farm.

[edit] Or wind etc... maybe a pig farmer could burn enough methane to make it profitable but thats getting pretty far fetched.

vaporware: https://github.com/dacsunlimited/bitsharesx/releases/

Transactions confirm instantly. DPOS works beautifully so far.
