I scanned it with avira.  Weird thing is that avira scanned 2 files.  I only received 1 file.

Using Windows?  It makes temp files when scanning/opening some files.

Could it be... ? yes it can..! Just avoid receiving/downloading files from total new strangers or people you don't trust. Atleast avoid it on the personal system that you never want to get in influence of any malicious file.

Yes, if you don't know the person, never do it.

Also if you know the person, still ask what it is. Because there are many viruses that just send files to everyone in the contact list to spread themselves over the skype network.

Yes! Because apparently, you can change file names to end to any extension. Maybe it's not even an image and as soon as you try to open it it starts downloading a virus. Never open files received from people you don't know.

Viruses usually comes from unknown senders, emails or files format.
If you received this file from person you know, send him private message and check if he send you this file or not.

Just scan any file  you download before opening it.

There is a possibility it could be bound malware.
If the file is way too big or looks odd size wise that could be a sign.
Scan it on virustotal, it has a huge amount of antiviruses and is ran by Google so its pretty awesome.

Just curious...Who is sending you a jpg that you don't know on Skype...?

Seems like a rather odd request?

I would probably not deal with it if you are unsure who the sender is..

Do you want a virus?

Because that is how you get viruses!

Or if you want your bitcoin stolen as this is something else that can happen.

If you were to use skype and open the pic in a VM then you may be okay though.

This is very much possible. I would advise against it unless you know and trust the person sending the picture.

Even then, ask if the person sent it or a virus that infested his system. I have had multiple friends send me files that they didn't send.

It would be rare that a virus would be found in a image file.

There are ways to make a .exe appear as a .jpg and there were exploits where skype didn't detect this.

Just google: jpg virus skype

you will finds million of results.

Yeah although such viruses are rather more rare than others, you should not accept files from strangers. He can just upload the image online (to a known website) and show you it via link if he has to.
Scanning does not always prevent viruses, nor does AV software detect a lot of personal (made) viruses.

Absolutely not, as many other said it a bad idea to receive any kinda unknown files it could be malicious and spreads to your contact list.
Check out the skype community (http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-archive/Virus-File/td-p/382665).

Correction: it is very much not okay to open any file received from skype from anyone.

Use other means, like email or sharing services.

If you know and trust the person you are receiving the file from and can speak to them via voice or video then you should be able to receive it.

There could be a .rar hidden behind that unzips itself, just watch.

As everyone said above I am confirming it is a rare virus that will set your computer on fire. Do not download.
