What is wrong with someone sending dust to it?  Never heard anyone complain about that before lol

I too don't like the fact that anyone can add a few satoshi and ruin the "originality" of the coin. I would rather it have just the original bits loaded by Mike Cladwell.

Since Mike made his whole list public, I wouldn't be surprised if all of them end up with some dust.

Someone random picks your coins address from the list, out of the thousands, to add a few satoshi, unlikely.

Someone random adds a satoshi to every address on the list, even more unlikely.

Someone gets jelly of how cool these coins are and that they don't own one decides to ruin the originality of it by adding a satoshi and a public note saying "your coins suck ass!!!", more likely than the previous scenarios. Best to keep the address private IMO.

The addresses are already public though pretty easy to dig them up...just check all the addys as he funded them.

I'm just saying, it makes your coin an easier target.

I suppose if you consider that an "attack" of sorts...first time I have heard of anyone minding that though.

I just like for it to be completely original, those extra bits will be more of an annoyance than a blessing, for me  :)

I have never thought about the dusting before. If you have sever OCD, yeah than that is a problem!

Perhaps in the future some Casascius coins will have "dust" in them and the few that manage to stay clean will be more desirable. Could be possible.

I know of someone who only buys Casascius coins if the codes line up a certain way. Every collector is different  :)

All it takes is 1 guy to copy all those and dust them...not hard.

Add on the cost of transaction fee per dust job, per address. A hefty price to pay if you ask me.

You don't even need the list of coin addresses. Sending 1 satoshi to every one of the 200,000 addresses with 1 or more BTC will cost you less than a dollar total, including transaction fees.

Thanks for pointing that out, I knew I was missing something. The 0.0001 transaction fee is optional I'm guessing?

Actually, I am off by a factor of 10. If you create 200 transactions, each sending 1 satoshi to 1000 addresses, it will cost you 0.002, plus perhaps 0.02 in fees. That's a total of 0.022 BTC or around $13.

This guy is doing something like that for some unknown reason: 1Enjoy1C4bYBr3tN4sMKxvvJDqG8NkdR4Z

To be honest I really don't think dusting a coin makes it less desirable. It's a few sat extra. So? As long as money isn't going out, I don't think it's a problem

They only way for us to avoid this dusting thing to become a reality and interfere with the originality of the coins is for us, as a community to decide that a bit of dust won't ruin the originality of the coins or impact the collector or trade value.

one of these days, I might just take 0.01BTC and figure out how to write a script to dust every single casascius address made, redeemed and unredeemed.  That would end the debate.
Would you guys hate me?

*We* might not hate you, but historians 100 years from now will probably think you're an asshole.

It only takes a $15 baseball bat to wreck a car dealership, and yet people manage to not do it. Ruminate on this for a bit.

I say dust all of the Casascius coins!  I do not think it matters to the value of the coins at all.

Reminds me of Herostratus, a greek guy who burned the temple of Artemis for the sole purpose of becoming (in)famous. After being executed, they actually made it forbidden to speak his name upon penalty of death in order to deprive him of his goal.

Perhaps its better i be known as the original casascius / physical coin historian myself :P

I would not be surprised if someone one day dusted all the cas coins, just to be the guy who did it.

Funny thing is that my rational opinion is that it does not matter = free bitcoins.
But I must admit, I think it beautiful to see that 1 single transaction from Mike and the ballance is 1.00000000 BTC.
Anyway, if someone transfered 1 Satoshi to my coins and tagged the tx "Herostratus was here", I would properly find it amusing and a piece of history.
