Title: Best GPU mining option?
Post by: aso118 on August 08, 2014, 10:47:40 PM
I’m a small miner (about a half a dozen graphics cards – 7770s, 7970s, etc) and I’ve been Script mining on ScriptGuild since it’s opened.  At the time, script ASICS were just a rumor and script was the most profitable algo to mine.  ScriptGuild is closing down and I’m looking for a new home.  I'm out of the loop with x11, x13, x15, keccak and scrypt-n.  I’ve just spent the last 5 or 6 hours reading, and trying to figure out ‘which is best.’

From what I gathered, all of these are 'better' then mining Script since the new Script-ASICs.  Is there anyway for a GPU miner to switch to the most profitable algos?  Or is one better for a GPU only miner like me?  Or should I just stick with Script mining since I already have the configs made?

EDIT:  Sorry - I was on the wrong board.  I meant to post this under the altcoin thread!!!

EDIT 2: I tried deleting, but I got the following message?

move away from scrypt. its power hungry and asic turf now. try looking into XMR or any of the X algo range.

Is one better than another, to mine?  x11 vs x13 vs x15?

I've never heard of Monero.  What kind of speeds do GPUs get?  The hardware comparison is pretty limited to CPUs.

Ditto on this one!

you need to ditch Scrypt it's ASIC only territory now.

X11 X13 X15 NIST5 SCRYPT-N Keccak SCRYPT-Jane all pretty much the same profitability wise.

X11 is probably the most "Mainstream" and it's true right now Cryptonight is the most profitable...but it will probably be even with all the rest very soon.

GPU mining profitability is very slim currently and thats the simple truth.

In regards to Monero (Cryptonight) hashrates the Google doc does have another tab at the bottom for GPU's however it's not very up to date.

expect 400h/s-500h/s for a 280X and scale to your equivalent hardware.

I personally am mining monero right now but i don't really expect that to last that much longer :(... i am just trying to hold on till winter and also hoping the current trend is going to reverse.

You really have two options.  Move to a different algorithm.  Do ROI as GPU is hard to profit for most people now.

Other option sell cards and get a Scrypt miner.  It will use much less electricity on mining Scrypt and have much higher hash rate.

Hashing benefit difference between X11/X13 coins between CPU/GPU are pretty negligible.  I would probably consider one of the Scrypt-N based coins like VertCoin or Spots but the bottom line is unless you have free electricity or damn near it your more than likely going to lose money in the long run vs. simply buying and holding.

Is mining Script-N pretty similar to the profitability of x11/x13?

Are GPUs even worth it with ASICS coming?  Thx.

Yes it has a similar level of profitability however takes more Power to mine, because of this your cost of electricity has a more significant impact. If you have free/very cheap electricity then Scrypt-N could be the best choice, but if it's expensive you would be better off with a different algorithm like x11.

It looks to me like GPU's will still be around mining for a while yet, whenever an ASIC is released for an algorithm there will always be alternative algorithms around that have no ASIC's. For example SHA-256 (Bitcoin) and Scrypt (Litecoin) already have ASIC's so people mine other algo's like X11. If X11 has an ASIC released GPU miners will just move to X13, X15 or any of the available options, there will always be an algo that is ASIC free for people to move too.

As for GPU's actually being worth it.... well it will probably be that the very best mining farms with the best electricity rate will always remain profitable, however for the average joe paying a normal power bill... things are not looking so good unless you are happy be earning <$1 per day for all your trouble.

The profitability for x11 drop so much, is it just me or for everyone?
