Title: USB scrypt miner too good to be true?
Post by: shayr on August 10, 2014, 07:57:40 AM
Hello

I just found this usb scrypt miner a few days ago:
link removed (#post_)

Product page says it provides 8 GH/s hashrate, so it looked a little weird for me. Spoke with the seller on skype and he confirmed
that it has such hashrate. I remain very sceptical.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Shay

Yes, I thought so too. This is probably for bitcoin (makes sense, there are usb with this hashrate).

The seller either didn't understand me or he doesn't really knows his stuff (or he is lying, but I reserve judgement until he answers my other question as he does have very good feedbacks).

Maybe this story on USB will inform you and others some more.

Hmmm...

Inasmuch as this could be true (and as you can never know which one has got malicious code on it), this really
not practical to stop using usb devices. We use them for too many things today.

If you are a private person (i.e. not a business), then you need to put on your firewall and antivirus software and
should be enough (most routers have got an internal firewall today, so another layer of security exists).

The question now becomes why would a company (say sandisk for instance) will manufacture a USB that can inject
malicious code into your computer? In addition, no one really tried hacking a private person's computer (if someone put
123456 for his internet banking site, sorry but he is an idiot).

Also, most times (if not all) you need to be physically at the computer to use the usb (the hacker, of course).

So, I respectfully disagrees with the article, it looks like another new scare for me (if you want to be safe, don't ever connect to the internet,
but this is not really possible nowadays, is it?).

I think I found the product from another seller. Looks the same, different and more
sense making specifications:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Arrival-litcoin-USB-miner-144k-Overclock-to-280kH-s-LTC-miner-144K-Scrypt-miner-All/2000134026.html (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Arrival-litcoin-USB-miner-144k-Overclock-to-280kH-s-LTC-miner-144K-Scrypt-miner-All/2000134026.html)

What do you think? Also, about price, think it is worth it (my budget is not that high) - overclock at 280KH/s for 27 euros free shippment

You can go for super fishy sellers on china ebay... orrrr, you could buy legit gridseed or such at similar price from "local" and known sellers?

I have just asked about it. This is a 8 Gb USB flash drive + LTC miner with the software inside. I asked about the software to use with.

It seems that it only will work with Windows :(

It's 220kh/s miner on a 8GB usb drive with some scyrpt miner chip in it. Maybe one day an 8gh/s usb will exist but that can be a decade or so before that happens.

I don't believe the chips exist at this point in time that would allow a USB powered miner to get such a speed doing scrypt.
I could very well be wrong but I'm 99% sure that is either for SHA256 or a massive scam.

Title specifically says 8G NOT 8GH, and it ALSO says in the title "220kH/S LTC " very clearly NOT 8GH, sigh, why is actually reading something so difficult for some people.

I just found this usb scrypt miner a few days ago:

Its either a scam or it is for sha-256 and not scrypt. Not worth taking the risk..

They say:
Model Number:8G
Stand SPeed:8GH/S =145KH/S

Don't know what does 8GH/s mean...but scrypt is obviously 145KH/s...for 50USD you can buy GPU with 300KH/s scrypt...

8GB is for sha256 i think, they just wrote it in a way it seems different, for "sensationalism" purpose

and this noob aka seems to promote this shit

Title: Re: USB scrypt miner too good to be true?
Post by: shayr on August 24, 2014, 04:30:45 PM
I am not really promoting it  :). I knew right from the start it cannot be.
BTW, it seems that he changed the description from the date my message was
written.

I spoke with him on Skype on that day (August 10), and I told him it can't be. I did found
the same USB in another store that wrote the real hashrate.

Also, before calling me a noob, please read my post "I remain very sceptical".

I might be new to the forums, but I have a lot of experience with software and hardware
and I always do my research, I knew right away it couldn't be 8Gh/s scrypt mining, the seller
was misinformed or a scammer, I don't know and don't care.

With the dual Gridseed being only 350KH/s, of course a usb could not be more.

I am going to remove the link if I can too, so people won't think I am promoting this.

Just to add device-spesific info (because this thread is coming up on google search still)
I have been using the said device for 2 months straight now.
Bought it on aliexpress for 16USD

It is a 8Gigabyte usb flash disc, containing files and drivers necessary.

The miner part is 200 kh/s Scrypt miner (advertised speed is 144kh/s, works solid given correct parametres with cgminer 3.1.1)
Couldn't get it to work at 280kh/s though, this is my search criteria, which got me to this thread in the first place.

at 200kh/s it currently generates about 0,001 LTC / day at my preferred pool
So it will take years to get back the money i paid.

anyway, it is just for fun & research :)
