He has not yet been ruled out from being Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of bitcoin. Here is one link for his thesis in Philosophy. And people lie, I wouldn't be suprised if the person/people behind Satoshi revealed himself/themselves to Gavin, but swore Gavin not to tell anyone and deny it. What matters are his ideas, linking it to a personal name would only show that his ego was above his desire to do something new, and open space to people say that Bitcoin is bad because X Satoshi's opinion/acts/manners/wharever is bad.
