Title: What's the difference between InstaWallet.org and EasyWallet.org?
Post by: Trader Steve on March 22, 2012, 03:00:18 PM
They seem like very similar services - any comments or opinions? I've been away from this board for a while.

Thanks

Hmmmm never even heard of easywallet.. they look like clones, but Instawallet has been around a long time and has earned at least some level of trust.

Just never keep more in an ewallet than you can afford to lose.

Anyone know how long Easwallet has been operating?

I'm wary of ewallet services, but I trusted Instawallet because of the faith the rest of the community has (had?) in it.

I like the idea of several alternative wallet sites like this (I think blockchain.info offers a similar service).

The domain was registered March 6th -- a little more than two weeks ago.

I believe this might be the operator of the site:

Someone posted the link to reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/r87x8/easywalletorg_web_based_bitcoin_wallet/), at which point the developer stepped forward (http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/r87x8/easywalletorg_web_based_bitcoin_wallet/c43r79e).

While I don't think I'll trust EasyWallet with any funds just yet, I have to say I like their feature of generating new receiving addresses for you. InstaWallet should consider copying this.

The QR Code is kind of a nice touch, but I really don't see anything to distinguish it from Instawallet as of yet, save the multiaddress option, which could get cumbersome.

I wondered also why someone was so eager to clone an existing service (that davout and I are operating for free at our own cost) when there are so many developments yet to be made to improve bitcoin usability..

Anyway, we have plans to keep building on Instawallet and make it as reliable as possible going forward. Acquiring it from jav was also our way to acknowledge his invention and commitment to bitcoin.

I like kangasbros, but I actually use the API at instawallet, so until then, i'm faithful.

It's an opensource clone, that's cool!

Redundancy, I guess.

Disclaimer: I am the developer of easywallet.org

I wanted some additional features over instawallet - such as mobile usage (easywallet.org is very quick and fast to use with iPhone with QR code scanning), and more anonymity (new addresses generated automatically each time one is used).

And yeah, I started this when I heard that instawallet was closing down. It is good to know that you'll be back in business.

I like kangasbros, but I actually use the API at instawallet, so until then, i'm faithful.

Our API is excatly the same as instawallets - however we don't have the streaming function. If you need that, I will consider implementing it.

https://easywallet.org/api

And actually we have one additional call: balance_unconfirmed, which return the normal balance as well. I have developed a simple script, which keeps my balance on a specific level. It is meant to be run from a secure linux instance, which has more secure bitcoind setup.

This is great news. I'm going to PM you with an idea/use case .

FYI Instawallet actually has a full-fledged iPhone app, it's called FriendlyPay, Android one is on its way, and it doesn't take fees on outgoing transactions. Instawallet now also has a nice websocket API that will push balance updates in real-time without relying on long-polling.

We'll definitely keep an eye on you ;)

I like the dual currency option/display - very nice for making conversions without having to do the math in your head. This would be good for InstaWallet as well. I would love to see both services flourish. Banner ads as a revenue model looks like a good idea - I see InstaWallet has already incorporated this. Great job guys!

I like this feature. +1

I rather like static addresses in some circumstances. Anyway to make it optional?

Instawallet addresses are static. It's a feature, the rationale being that it's extremely easy to get a new address by creating a new wallet.
It also allows significant performance gains as the bitcoin client's "accounts" feature doesn't have to be used. (that was making the previous Instawallet really slow)

I will queue this feature for easywallet.org (missed it before).

Also I will probably try to add firstbits support at some point.

The android app is now available (search "instawallet" in Google Play applications)
