The distribution was just a hype to get the prices up for a clone. They hold and will continue to hold most of it while squeezing the supply. Looks like the Ripple cash cow is done so they are trying it again. The distribution was also gamed by a lot of blackhat hackers and then there were people advertising on Indian websites to sign up to get $5 and some guys collected millions of Stellar doing that.
As well Stellar plans to give out coins to Ripple holders and the people who own tons of Ripple were the ones who created Stellar, so they're going to get 5 billion coins plus probably another 10 billion just for holding Ripple. There is talk on Stellartalk that there may be alternative ways to claim soon -- perhaps verifying via other social networking sites, or with SMS, or other things like that. I mean you can ask them to help you claim some stellars you wanted but couldnt because of facebook Then you'd have to fork your parents' private information over to the Stellar Foundation for the sake of a giveaway. I could consider that for my own account (I refuse), but not my parents....
