Title: Are you spending or hodling? (a poll to summarize previous threads)
Post by: Possum577 on August 11, 2014, 10:46:52 PM
i'll make sure to refresh the results so we can all learn from the findings.

It would be really great if we could get several hundred people participating.

Thanks.

The proper protocol is to force yourself to spend, and then replenish what you've spent.

It takes extra effort.  But those who just hold are doing nothing to further the Bitcoin economy, and are thereby reducing the chance their their "HODLINGS" will go up in value.

Use the coins folks.  As often as possible.  Then replenish

I'm guerrilla trading. I don't have the confidence to hodl, perhaps if I had entered the game real early then I wouldn't have to worry about my initial investment.

Once I cashout my initial investment then I'll look to hodl when the time is right.

I would only tell you that this is one of dozens thread about this matter. People are asking the same question all over again everyday. I would not go so far as to say that bitcoin price will be much higher than it is now in the near future so I am spending all my coins. If i want something i just buy it...

There's a proper protocol for how to use Bitcoin? That sounds like "fiat talk!" In fact, if we were all to hodl Bitcoin, the price would go up because none of us would be willing to sell any. The transactional nature of Bitcoin is what keeps its price stable.

I think the beauty of Bitcoin is it's versatility to satisfy what its user wants to satisfy...it's not just a medium of exchange or a store of value, right now it's both.

Thanks for your comment and vote.

You're absolutely right, which is why I thought it would be more useful to just have a poll on the topic...so people can see the general consensus after voting rather than having to read through many comments and then guess which way the community is leaning.

I think a lot of people do this, myself included. By spending your bitcoin you will be able to reap the benefits of using bitcoin (near instant transaction, low/no fees for sending money around the world, potential discounts by merchants), will further the bitcoin economy, potentially get more people to buy and use bitcoin. By purchasing an approximately equal amount on an exchange or a trade you will not lose out on any potential price appreciation.

I'm not sure how to answer this. I buy plenty of stuff with btc, although I am "invested" in btc with my mining equipment... I don't plan on converting any of those coins to fiat, though.

I'm holding and spending. I've spend $90 in Bitcoin in about a week, but I replace it whenever I buy something.

Spending and holding I think I've spent around $150 this month alone in Bitcoin and have replaced 50% of it again.

Although my net bitcoin holdings are going up on a monthly basis, I do spend a lot of it. For example, I just spent some coins on a small Dell server which will be used as a firewall and to control a cabinet of miners. Last week I spent some BTC on a nice Rado watch from overstock.com. By spending my coins I feel like I am rewarding businesses that accept it. In the long run, you need market penetration for the value to go up. For that to happen, you need more stores to accept it. If everyone holds, no store would bother to accept it as payment.

I buy the things I need (mostly electronics) and save the rest. This way whatever happens I won't be broke and sad.
If bitcoin goes up I'll profit, if it goes down, I'll still have more than I had a year ago when I got involved. Do what you want with your coins but have no regrets.

and just begging the price to rise somehow..these ppl are like germs on bitcoins.

me personally, ive spent about 0.8 BTC (~500$) this month.

it is true. Due to the deflationary characteristic of btc, people tend to hoard it. The poll on the top can show it.

I am holding, but adding a little more here and there.   I don't really spend any BTC unless it is a company that is only accepting BTC and not fiat.   When I do spend it, I immediately purchase the same amount of BTC to replace it though.

if more people used their coins, it would drive the price down a bit but make bitcoin more legitimate. if you are holding, then you are probably contributing towards raising the price.

either way works for me. i'd love to see bitcoin get higher, for personal reasons, but seeing bitcoin become a serious animal is also a bonus.

When I first started to read your post I saw that you mentioned that you bought a server from dell, and I thought that you were the person who had bought $50k worth of server from dell in BTC. Unfortunately after reading more of your post, it turns out this is not the case. I am a very big believer that this is how you should handle your bitcoin. This will show merchants that accepting bitcoin is good for business and their bottom line

You should add the opition trading9buy low sell high stuff).

For me, at the moment I barely buy stuffs with fiat because I want to buy some savings, and so is it Bitcoin. Only if I find something really worth on Marketplace.

But I'm not holding either, because, I sold my bitcoins on exchange until we confirm if we are going to have a downtrend or not.

I don't think that's true. If someone held or hodled (haha) then there would be less bitcoins for people to buy so it's more rare so the price should increase. Unless you're just talking about bitcoin integration, then yes you'd want people to be spending bitcoin. But if people are just converting back to fiat not sure if it's helping the bitcoin economy much.

I've decided to hold what I have left for the day I can walk in a brick n mortar and sell them without a hassle. I'll either end up with a fat stack of cash and a world tour in style or another worthless keepsake on a computer like GeoWorks Ensemble or Microsoft Bob. Either way it's too much of a hassle to buy Bitcoins to replace what I just spent on a purchase. Much easier to just make the purchase and hold the coin.

I was going to say where's the both option. I think the best situation is to hold most of it as an investment but allow yourself some to spend just to keep promoting the use of bitcoin. If everybody hoddled bitcoin wouldnt be much of a currency.

Maybe they do want to spend it, but if you're a "true bitcoiner" you'll also probably realise the worth and potential value behind it and decide to hodl to spend at a later date when you can get more bang for your buck.

On AVERAGE, using btc at merchants should not affect the price. In order to use it, then you had to have bought it first. So essentially using the btc and buying it back means there is no net change.

WTF is Hodling? Do you mean ---> "Hoarding"? or holding?

Well anyways, anyone can have a type or two.  :D I do both "Hoarding" bigger amounts in paper wallets offline in cold storage {My extra pension fund} and then I use a small amount online to buy coffee and donuts.  ;D

I feel I have a balanced life with BTC  ;)

No. Those that are holding are helping the price go up, making the hype, expensive Bitcoin is the best way of promotion right now, not the merchant adoption.

Don't feel too bad. I bet every single BTC holder has at one time spent BTC for a foolish thing like mining gear.

At one point in time this would have been a good investment. Once upon a time erupters were the best and the greatest. As long as you didn't have to wait forever from the time you ordered it to the time it arrived you probably would have gotten ROI.

See my signature, as long as you spend 10% of your holding per year, the daily coin supply will continuously shrink thus guarantee a constant price appreciation year over year even if the adoption rate does not increase

So I guess I am only spending on what can help me hold more...

Why would you not spend/sell them the last time bitcoin got to the 1k/1.2k level last fall? I personally think the best thing to do with your coins is to spend them when you can, especially when you can get a discount for using bitcoin, then purchase the retail/non-discount amount of bitcoin via an exchange. Over time the amount of total bitcoin you have will grow and you will reward companies for accepting bitcoin.

I think he is trying to say when the panic sellers join in the Sell frenzy then it drives the bitcoin price further down as the momentum rises.

vs

People who hold, which are reducing the number of bitcoins in accumulation which you may ONLY and I mean ONLY see benefits in VERY long term IF bitcoins succeeds full mainstream. But I believe that ONLY holding at the beginning when this is trying to take off is not good for the eco system

Once I have legit worth-holding-long-term stack I will start spending. Spending BTC and using it as a currency is basic if we want this to work, so if you have a lot of BTC, spend it.
