Title: BLOCKING newbs in self-moderated thread
Post by: haploid23 on August 13, 2014, 12:49:55 AM
The only option that a self-moderated thread has is to delete posts. Can we please have more control if we're the OP? Specifically, an option to only allow users with a certain post-count to post in the thread, or an option to block certain people from posting in the thread.

Yes, I know you can just keep deleting their posts, but they can keep posting it back. Ignore doesn't work either, because in order to delete their post, you'd have to un-ignore, which defeats the purpose of ignoring in the first place. Ignoring/blocking someone does not prevent them from spamming the thread.

Implementing some kind of filter in self-moderated thread would be greatly appreciated!

That's an interesting suggestion. It could help with spam, but there's already a system to limit newbies from spamming.

The anti-spam system is good for brand new users with less than 15 activity, after that they will have a waiting time around 70 seconds, enought to be a pain.

Also it will not prevent users from making annoying reqthings uests that aren't against forum rules, like newbies asking for loans in a topic that says no loans for newbies(guess that is the reason for this request).

I and others have suggested being able to ban specific users from your self-moderated threads before. I don't think banning an entire Member group is a good idea though. If a newb does post some shit in your thread just delete the post and use the proposed ban feature.

I seem to remember someone advising that if you ask someone to stop posting in your moderated thread and they continue, its considered abuse and is bannable. I may have got this confused with something else though. Mods?

No, that's correct, but it's a hassle to do that for both parties involved and this would cut out the need to even do that at all.

Yes, good point. Thanks.

No, I'm serious when I'd like to filter out a whole user group just from certain threads. Here is an example:

I have a rather large loan thread, one of the two terms is that no newbs under 20 posts request a loan, yet somehow they think they're the exception. You delete or block one, 5 more will come in. Can't really just press the ignore button, because then you can't delete their posts, and they'll keep asking why I'm not answering.

I see your point with that example, but I thought you might want to abuse it to block all newbs from participating in a discussion or something which I wouldn't think was right. People have suggested putting a minimum activity restriction on the loan section which could probably be a good idea.

Well I'm about to delete the post once again, but here it is just for context preservation in this thread. A newb with 2 post:

I'm loaning out btc pretty open-endedly. Approval for amount and duration will be be on a case-by-case basis. And for the sake of transparency and public verification, I don't take requests in PM's. You must post your request, amount of repayment, and address in this thread.

Newbs with 20 activity or less, don't bother asking.

Stats 08/08/14

Approved: 22/76
Denied: 54/76

Current btc loaned out: 5.572 btc

Hello sir,

Is new member here can request for the loan?.
I know this is unsecure loan for you. For first let me introduce myself : i am a forex trader since 4 years ago and my system winning rate is above 60% each day. I am also active many forex forums. Perhaps someday we can have good relationships.

Regards.

Yes, minimum activity or post-count filter is exactly what I'm requesting for in a self-moderated thread.
