Title: Digit Grouping would make Bitcoin more User Friendly
Post by: Bitcoin++ on August 13, 2014, 07:40:30 AM
Why do so few in the Bitcoin world group digits? Wallets, exchanges, shops, almost all forget it.

I'm tired of seeing 0.00158 BTC. Why not write 0.001,58 ? Or 0.001'58 ?

I vote for the latter!

Another example : 1235.12354823 = 1'235.123'548'23

I think $1 is about 0.0017 BTC. When paying by BTC, the amount is usually more than 0.001. So it doesn't matter. Another thing is when sending more than 0.1 BTC, there is no transaction fee required. So people tend to send more than 0.1 BTC to be free charge.

Wut? Fee has nothing to do with the amount you send. The standart fee is 10k satoshi per kbyte.

I think thats why people use mBTC, µBTC and similiar (e.g. the awful "bit"*)
"." and "," have different meanings in different countries. A possible solution would be to use the SI and use spaces, but apparently people do not like it.

1 235.123 548 23

* Sorry, personal preference.
# bit as in 0 or 1
# Bit as in the Unit to messure information
# bit as in a little bit
# bit as in the little thingy you put on a power drill
# bit as the german beer
I just dont need another meaning for bit in my head even though most of them are clear in the context.

Use preev.com and copy and paste. There it's done for you. No digits required.  ;D

On another note .... It would be better is the bitcoin adress could have default spacing. To make it easier to read and use. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm French and here using spaces is the norm (for fiat), mixing "." and "," is confusing as hell.

Yes, that's the whole purpose behind the metric system--it makes it much easier to use really big and really small numbers.  Just change the unit and move the decimal point.

What about grouping for addresses?

Which is easier when trying to make sure that you've got exactly the correct address before sending?

18WJUt7kCXBCDzzkDtN5JNGDorjokU69P4

or

18WJU t7kCX BCDzz kDtN5 JNGDo rjokU 69P4

18WJU - t7kCX - BCDzz - kDtN5 - JNGDo - rjokU - 69P4

Except for vanity addresses, checking the first several digits is more than sufficient.

I guess it was enough and pleasing to the eye.
example: 0.0017, 0.01 and again when it was uncomfortable to wear coma, headache eye  :-\

People are used to seeing numbers formatted like this 1,235.4501, but if you use commas in the decimal portion like this, 1,235.450,1 I guarantee you'll confuse people. An easier way is to write 0.00158 BTC as 1.58 mBTC.
