Title: Best place to post your PGP key
Post by: ACCTseller on August 20, 2014, 10:46:59 PM
Where is the most appropriate place to post your public PGP key in your profile in case someone wants to send an encrypted PM to you or wants to verify your PGP signature?

Mine's in my sig (hosted by Google Sites).

So I would more or less need to have it hosted somewhere and post a link to it? There is no good place in the forum itself to keep it?

Not this current forum, it might be in the new forum software. I mean, you can post your key ID now, and people would have to import it from a keyserver, but there's nowhere here to affix the whole public key block to your account. You could make your own topic/post in an uneditable subforum (don't remember which ones there are other than Auctions) but that could be deleted.

I guess you could post in in the Reputation board and lock it. I don't know if you can edit yoour posts there though.

Actually users can't unlock threads locked by a moderator, so if one gets a mod/admin to lock it that would be a workaround since posts in locked threads can't be edited. Mods can still unlock it though.

Are mods generally willing to lock threads for this reason? I would think they would get overwhelmed by requests for this if this was done on a regular basis.

You are able to lock the thread yourself, see here:

did you even read the thread? The whole point of a mod locking it is so that the user can't unlock it later.

Well, maybe I miss the point, but I created a thread and locked it. Now I'm unable to unlock it. That's pretty much the desired outcome, no?

Looks like I was mistaken. :-[ I always thought you could lock and unlock your threads because I heard scammers were locking their topics to prevent people from calling them out, then unlocking for a split second to bump.

They are able to do this. I see this all the time in the marketplace (and with a self moderated thread). I personally think it should be against forum rules as there is no purpose to this other then to scam, but it is besides the point.

I also was just able to unlock this thread after I locked it. The button was in the same place.

Trust ratings can be left on their profile and more detailed discussion posted in Scam Accusations https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=83.0

Some of us would rather not have to constantly delete the bullshit people post (that has nothing to do with actually executing a transaction) to bump their count for sig advertising campaigns.

There would be very little to say (and there would be zero concrete evidence) unless you actually took the time to attempt to deal with them. Plus if someone asks a question on your thread you only need to answer it one time, verses potentially many times via PM, especially if it is something that many people would likely want to know.

On a separate note, I have posted my PGP key here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=751322.new#new), if possible can a mod please lock this topic?

Maybe we should invent a place to host this information exactly for the purpose of allowing other people to find it. It'd have to be some kind of server that holds public keys. Before we build it, we need a good name for it. What kind of name should we give to key-holding server? Decisions, decisions...

Ya, I know that you can use a key server, but it would be very difficult to associate a specific key on the key server with a specific account. Someone could easily find a dormant account with positive trust, upload a key to the key server and claim they lost the password to the account in order to scam someone.
