Title: Catalysts
Post by: jimbobway on April 03, 2012, 05:19:46 PM
Catalysts, in the financial world, are basically triggers that cause the price to go up (or down).  Some previous catalysts included bloggers spreading the word.  Mainstream media picking up on the news.  Exchanges such as Mt. Gox being opened.  What are some potential catalysts for bitcoin to explode?

Here are my picks:

1.) Diablo III and Virtual Goods.  Combine Diablo with ogrr.com and you've got more than a million dollar market for virtual goods.
2.) GGB (Girls Gone Bitcoin) or something related.  They've made $700+ in a day.  Could be a start of a bandwagon.
3.) Gold/economy collapsing

You can add the empty block mining assholes to negative news. Lets hope that will be dealt with somehow.

I think the best news currently is the reuters article, however it hasn't been successful (I would have been if it were picked up by various news outlets worldwide like reuters stuff usually does).
It was there, at least something. But that's only very short term impact anyway.

news bashing bitcoin has no effect anymore. at this point everyone understands the points they bring up, and we can easily dismiss most of them as totally wrong, in-valid, not really a problem, or just missing the point.

the bottom line is as long as PvsNP is not solved bitcoin will continue to work and grow.

That's a bit exaggerated don't you think?

as far as i can see bitcoin is growing.... and that's because the fundamentals continue to be true, and unbreakable.
as long as this is true, bitcoin will continue to grow.

paypal is exaggerated
bitcoin is underrated
(i mean by common people, i guess people hear might see bitcoin for the all powerful unstoppable force that it is  ;) )

no?

1) can get sued easily
2) will get old fast
3) gold wont crash since the money printing is still going on

  • Ogrr (from my understanding) is a marketplace, not a money transmitter; it'd be like suing Craigslist because you bought an item from another person who posted there
  • Porn industry adoption of Bitcoin is only a matter of time; first major studio to use it will experience improved profit margins & others will follow
  • Yup: economy can crash, gold will still rise

There are more powerful catalysts:

  • Inter-economy lending (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=65.0); e.g. BTC->USD->BTC
  • Adoption among the unbanked (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unbanked) in developed nations
  • Continuing disincentives to use contemporary money instruments; e.g. intrusive reporting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Secrecy_Act) through heavy-handed AML (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-money_laundering)/KYC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_your_customer) enforcement

Catalysts:

- A mayor retailer (amazon, itunes,..) or internet based service provider (rapidshare, ebay, facebook,..) accepts BTC
- A country accepts BTC as legal tender
- It is revealed that large investment funds plan to invest in BTC (large scale money influx)
- BTC experiences growing adoption among retailers and customers
- BTC proves to be a safe investment oportunity (like gold)
- Mayor wave of media attention (we have seen nothing yet!) ...
imagine:Weinstein Company Blockbuster, starring Shia LeBeouf and Jennifer Lawrence, in supporting roles: Kurt Russel, Jennifer Tilly
  and Justin Timberlake
in "The Bitcoin Network"!!![/size]
  directed by Zhou Thong

Cataclysms:

- Zhou Tong directs the above pictured movie
- 1st mayor ruling in any country (especially any european country or the US) making BTC illegal
- a mayor flaw in the source code of BTC is discovered
- MTGox experiences a huge theft < 1 Mio. USD stolen
- Mayor botnet gains and stays in control of 51% of the network
- Satoshi returns from space and announces BTC is a SCAM!

This will never happen, cuz it wont allow the gov to spend more than they have. They need access to printers to live.

That exclusively depends on the definition of a country. ;)

Just FYI, it's major not mayor.

Yes, neither Bloomberg, Major Tom, nor Lee Majors!
