Title: Problem Sending Bitcoins
Post by: CfB on April 03, 2012, 08:54:03 PM
I've searched and didn't find anything relevant, apologies in advance if this has already be covered (as it likely has been).

I am trying to send bitcoins to an address and no matter what I try I get the error "Error: Transaction creation failed." There is no reason given so I am stumped. The wallet shows more than the amount I am trying to send and I've tried increasing the transaction fee to be paid to stupid levels, used previous versions - all to no avail.

Any idea what's going on and/or how to resolve this problem?

Thank you!

What OS and what version of client are you using?

Sorry, should have included that.

Win 7, client is 0.6.0.6-beta, but I've also tried with 0.5.3.1 and 0.5.2. I've sent from this wallet before, last time was in January.

I have no idea where's the issue, but exporting all private keys and importing them to new wallet should probably fix this.
I have no access to BTC client at the moment, so question for the advanced users:

What steps has to be taken to successfully export and import keys in 0.6?
I guess that decrypting the wallet, exporting with use of dumprivkey and then importing to new wallet should do the trick, right?

Trying exporting and importing private keys, but it's pretty tedious with more than a couple. But my tests showed some of my wallet amount so later I'll see if I can send coins again. Thank you!

Is your block chain current?

Yes, current by every reference I've checked.

Well, I've migrated the private keys to another wallet, the bitcoin total and transactions are as expected, and I still can't send any coins. Go figure. I'll try reloading the block chain and see what happens.

I was able to send small amounts to another wallet with fees about 100% higher than expected, something about the transaction size being too large or something. Whatever, I'm not sure this system will hold up in the long term if simple transactions are going to get fees beyond a reasonable amount. Thanks for the help Deafboy.

f you are receiving tiny amounts (e.g., as small payments from a mining pool) then fees when sending will be higher than if your activity follows a more normal consumer or business transaction pattern. As of bitcoin 0.5.3 the required fee it will ask for will not be higher that 0.05 BTC, though for most users there is usually no required fee at all and 0.0005 is the most common when one is required.

How do you export the private keys from the Windows 0.6.0 client?
