What is Avater?

I guess I have to apologize for my fellow citizen. Its called "Denglisch" and its used by germans that are poorly educated in the language english. Most suffer from overal bad education. I guess this is similar to "Engrish", which you might be familiar with.

While it would be a good idea for quick user identification, it could also become very annoying with certain animated avatars
If we are going to have them I think they should be locked to .jpg .png .bmp to prevent any malicious "avatars" being uploaded

How about you just wait until the new forum is released and any possible security issues are patched up:

<...>

Q: Why doesn't the forum let me add an avatar?
A: The forum was hacked some time ago. It is thought that the avatars were used as a means of injecting malicious code into the forum. Even though the vulnerability was patched, the avatars will be disabled until a new forum software (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=523070.0) is released.

Q: So when is the new forum software coming?
A: Well, according to theymos, some time after February 2015.

<...>

When will the software be finished?

About one year from now.

OP, your opinion or votes does not matter. This is not a majority decision, but rather a technical reason. Wait until the new forum 2.0 launches.

I believe they were limited and restricted to jpgs at one point but a few gif avatars still remain on the forum. I'm sure gifs won't be allowed with the new software.

I'd love to be able to change my av to something else. I'm kind of sick of this one since I don't even play SC2 anymore.

Theymos will remove it if you wish, but won't change it to something else. Just PM him if you want it gone.

Avatar isn't that important to me, and so I guess I could wait for another half year. :)

Although i don't have an avatar i also believe that security > usefulness

+1. I totally agree with you. Security is more important. But they can implement Gravatar or some default avatar in profile picture and we can select the one we want. It will be more secure. If they want, Theymos can make a thread asking to post the images they want to see on the collection and he can upload good ones to the collection after checking it. :)

The problem with avatars would be not because someone could exploit any known security issue, but because someone could find an issue not yet discovered in the avatar system.

Sans a million dollar forum upgrade, how so other forums on the internet defend against security breaches stemming from avatars?

Most other forums update their software versions continually. This forum is stuck on an older version because it has far too many custom made extensions making upgrade almost impossible and replacing it with a new forum equally possible. I'm not saying that's a reason to spend a million dollars on new forum software mind you...
