Title: Found a box of silver coins
Post by: Dan The Man on April 04, 2012, 06:25:36 PM
I was helping a friend clear out her parents house. Her dad is gone, and her mom has alzheimers, so they are selling the family house and contents to help pay for her care. As we are moving boxes and boxes of stuff out to be auctioned, I picked up a shoe box that felt like it had lead bricks in it. Opened it up and the thing was stuffed full of mostly Canadian silver dollars. I don't know much about coins, but I do know the price of silver, so I told her to set the box aside. When we counted them later, there were about 280 silver dollars from 1965 and 1966. There were also a ton of other Canadian coins and a few American silver dollars and half dollars and some foreign currency that probably came from her grandpa's time in the navy. Does anyone know much about coin values. If I post some pictures can you give a ballpark of what it is worth?

Your good up until 1968 I believe it was in Canada for silver coin and perhaps 1969 for the lesser silver content ones. The OP is best off going to a coin dealer to get them coins checked to see if they have collector value instead of just melt value of the silver.

Here are some high res photos. Sorry for the blur, my camera isn't meant for macro: http://imgur.com/a/a9Vvb
The silver dollars are mostly like the one pictured in the first photo. I left most of them with my friend because I didn't feel comfortable carrying around thousands of dollars with me.

Apparently the quarters might be worth quite a lot too. They seem to have a higher silver content.

Do I see some gold, or is it a bad picture?

Whatever you do, don't clean them.

Also, it looks as if you have some toned coins there: http://coins.about.com/od/coinsglossary/g/coin_toning.htm

Finished counting the majority of it:
285 silver dollars, worth around $5000
25 half dollars worth around $250
About 320 silver quarters worth around $1500
About 350 silver dimes worth around $630
A whole whackload of foreign currency I didn't identify
some stamps and trolly tickets
A bunch of old Newfoundland money
A few sheets and cases of preserved coinage

@OP:

It's always fun finding things like this, ain't it?

Numismatic senses are tingling and telling me that you have quite a few Fine/Very Fines in there. Take them to a dealer or sell them individually on eBay.

(Or if you really want to have some fun with them, use them in the Bitcoin community by selling them, giving them away as promotions, or anything else fun. You only live once.)

I'd wait to sell them, silver is in a bit of low atm.

Unless the cash is really needed for something pressing.

I finally separated out the silver and the other coins. Totalled just under 250 troy ounces of silver. About $7500. There is probably some collector value and face value in the remaining coins. I am guessing about $300
