Title: What wallet do you use for your Bitcoin?
Post by: Emperion on August 24, 2014, 04:43:37 PM
With the development of Bitcoin, there are several possibilities for Bitcoin storage, these range from desktops wallets, online wallets, paper wallets and more. Though the security of these different types of wallets is different, all of the types of wallets are growing more secure.

It is common for people to use the wallet that works best with how they spend their Bitcoin, for those doing micro transactions, the electrum wallet is likely the way to go as it has a zero tx fee (for a very slow transaction). Others prefer desktop wallets and those on the move might prefer blockchain.info's mobile wallet to make purchases on the go from their smart phones.

So I ask, Which wallet do you use?

Go to: http://cryptocoinchronicle.com/2014/08/wallet-use-bitcoin/ to vote in the poll. I will be doing a write up in the next few days based on the results of this poll and the responses I get in the thread

I use coinbase...I have heard about storing your wallet into cold storage but I am still slightly confused by that.

Coinbase offers a vault thing, which I seem to like, there is no way to get money out of there unless you confirm it with them, I think anyway

I use blockchain.info webwallet and phone app for daily purchases etc, but after I've earned or accumulated so much I transfer it to my Electrum wallet. Once it's got to a considerable amount I then back up the wallet and store it offline and create a brand new one to fill up and repeat the process.

Herewith my setup:

a) Offline Armory on netbook for cold storage/paper wallets

b) Online Armory on PC with hot wallet for daily transactions and also paper wallets as watch wallets

c) Mycelium on Android for out and about transactions with relatively small amount. Paper wallets also loaded so I can provide QR code to be scanned should I want somebody to send funds there

d) Xapo (for the debit card option - still waiting for card)

e) Xapo Vault (cold storage) with only limited amount to feed into normal Xapo account for debit card as required

So if you use Coinbase and use their vault?  Is it really that bad?

I believe Coinbase uses a script to send coins and sometimes it is delayed and that could cause an invoice to time out.  Also, since you don't have the private key you might not be able to prove you made a payment.  Usually those things are not a problem and for small amounts it is OK.  I would keep a small amount in another service like blockchain.info in case you run into some issue when you are paying for something.

I use Armory because of the cold wallet features, paper backups, and "coin control" to control which addresses are used in a transaction.  I use other services like blockchain.info for small amounts, when I am on the road, and to have a backup in case I am in a hurry.

It is delayed to get BTC from coinbase because they only have a limited amount of bitcoin in their hot wallet. They have certain security procedures that take time to complete to transfer BTC from cold storage to their hot wallet.

Their vault service forces you to wait 48 hours after requesting to withdraw bitcoin. The purpose of this is to give them time to notify you of the request and to cancel it in the event it was not from you.

I use blockchain.info, coinbase, mytrezor, and I am considering either Electrum or Multibit once they add trezor support. I use each of them for separate reasons, and I also like to keep coins spread out in different places.

I haven't tried Hive or Circle yet, but I want to give each of them a go...any comments on either of these?

My "working wallet" is GreenAddress.it. I keep less than 2BTC there - enough to buy something substantial if a deal arises, or to sell some Bitcoin face-to-face to someone who is interested in getting involved.

All of my savings are in long-term cold storage. I have custom 3d printed objects with my protected public and private keys and corresponding QR codes. Those are BIP 32 HD wallets, so I never deposit to the same address. The physical keys are BIP 38, so you'd need both the root private key and the passphrase to matter.

Finally, I may or may not have multiple passphrases used for the same private key. If the time ever came where I was forced to reveal my passphrase, an attacker could not be sure that he'd gotten all or even most of my reserves.

No problem, after you try it, report back here and let us know how you like it...   I would try it myself, but I have a jailbroken iphone and the ios is so old that itunes won't even recognize it to allow me to update to 7.x.   I was super stoked to hear that it was going to support both BTC and LTC, since I use both...

Anyone have any advice on why Coinbase Vault is not a good option???

It is a decent option, but the bottom line is that you DO NOT hold control of the private keys.   This means that if something happens to Coinbase (as a company), or if the government or something comes through and tells them to freeze your account (for any reason), then you cannot access your coins.

By using Coinbase as your wallet, you are trusting them to hold onto all of your funds, and there is no guarantee that if something happens that you will get your coins back.

I use them to purchase BTC, and I keep a very small amount there, but I would not leave the majority of my holdings there.

Also, (and this is my opinion), because of how much they are into compliance and things like that, I could see them being the very first company to start issuing 1099s to their users around tax time...

Well, that is a very good reason not to use them then, I am going to have to think about other ways to do this.  I guess my problem is selling the coins if I want to sell them, they are so easy to do but I definitely don't want to get taxed on that.

So if I have a flash drive I can create a cold storage correct?  Then when I connect it to a computer, I just want to make sure it is not on the internet?

I am new on this so sorry about the questions!

Using exchange wallet for now.

The exchange have the policy of keeping 95% of customer fund in cold wallet. And they have pass 3rd party audit before.

If you are selling coins, then you can always just send them back to your coinbase wallet when you want to sell them... that is easy.

If you are just looking for an online wallet, I would suggest using Blockchain.info.   This wallet allows you to control your private keys.   It all comes down to how often you will be spending coins...  If you are just holding them long term, then you may want to look into cold storage..

That depends on where you live...I wouldn't suggest trying to evade taxes if you are talking about a lot of money.   I believe the IRS is notified of any deposits greater then $5,000 into your bank at any time...

Based on the current guidelines, it is up to you whether to claim the short or long term capital gains...

I believe you are only reported if it's greater than 10,000. If its suspicious a bank CAN report you for amounts greater than 3,000. But these are generally cash deposits/withdrawals. not sure how BTC transfers would work.

As much as I wish it was 5,000, it is very small amounts and probably wouldn't be taxed a lot anyway.  I just don't like the IRS getting involved in Bitcoins if they don't accept it as payment.

For day to day transactions I use MultiBit. It's fairly simple, easy to use, and also syncs acceptably fast. The best thing is that it can very comfortably manage multiple wallets at once. For long storage I use paper wallets and sometimes I also use Electrum.

For online storage I use blockchain.info, but for offline storage I'm going to abandon the wallet altogether,  store the private key in an Aegis secure key is enough

From the beginning, I was using wallets from different clients, but once I fully understood how private key works, I found out that the private key is much more simple to work with than wallet files, and with wallet you are client-dependent. I'd rather use the private key directly for easy of access, and all the clients can import private key

Long term funds , I use Armory. Mostly cold storage, and I have a dedicated laptop that has never touched the internet for signing transactions.
Short term funds , Blockchain.info wallet

Me too use blockchain.info for online storage. But since wallet hacks are getting too frequent, nowadays  I store only a few mBTC in each of my online wallets. Most of my stash is safely stored in paper wallets and USB sticks.  ;D

BTW... I am keeping a few mBTC in my Bitstamp account also, in case of any emergencies.  ;D

If you have 2-factor set up and aern't lax with the security of your wallet.dat file you should be fine. The only people who ever lose funds in these hacks are when they haven't got 2-factor set up.

Electrum, Blockchain.info and bitWallet. :) I used Multibit but lost the files, I will probably use Multibit again instead of Electrum. Just want to test the features.

Nope. I have seen multiple posts here in bitcointalk, from people who had their coins stolen from blockchain.info despite enabling the 2-factor set up. If the hacker somehow succeeds in installing a keylogger or other spyware, then even the 2-factor authorization will be of very little use. Also, a lot of hacks are also occurring as a result of phishing links.

I use Core mostly. I've experimented with some others, but it's either Core for the desktop, or Bitcoin for Android.

I use blockchain.info and Android wallet.

I'm also using blockchain.info but I didn't mention it before because I only use it for small amounts then I send all to my Multibit wallet.

This is likely because the hacker would somehow gain access to a backup of the encrypted wallet file. AFAIK 2FA on blockchain.info is only specific to the identifier (username) of the wallet, if someone were to import a backup to another identifier then 2FA would not be required to spend the bitcoin.

Is there any halfway decent app for iPhone? Or anything in the works?
I either use my android tablet or the blockchain website, but both are cumbersome...

Hive got released recently for ios. I think it supports both BTC and LTC (not sure). I have been wanting to try it but my phone's ios is too old

Does Hive let you create an account to save your wallets to? I'm worried that my wallet will be lost if my phone is reset/broken for any reason.

Nope. You just want to save your pass phrase. Even if your phone breaks, you can use web by entering the paraphrase.

Try bitWallet. Best iOS wallet so far. If you just want to use only 1 address, then coinpocket is a better one but I don't suggest using a wallet having only one address forever. Otherwise, you can use web wallets like hive, Blockchain, GreenAddress, ANX etc... Web wallets isn't secure. So IMO, bitWallet is the best option. I hope an iOS developer would develop Mycelium for iOS. Waiting for that day! :)

using exchanger like bittrex, mintpal, poloniex and any other
if i just one wallet like for pc, it take so much fee if i want to sent my btc into other exchanger
so just let them into exchanger and if i want to sent  to another exchanger, i prefer exchange with doge first and then sent into other exchanger

Guys I'd suggest staying away from keeping all of your coins on coinbase or on exchange websites unless you want to run the risk of being goxx'ed at some point. The safest way is to have them on your PC with either an electrum seed or armory seed so that in the case of your PC crashing you can still recover all of your coins with your written down seed. Get some good antivirus software, don't visit cr4zy w3bw4rz websites and keep your coins in YOUR possession.

Breadwallet on iOS. Pretty sleak and easy. HD too. The rest of my coins I keep temporarily on circle/coinbase or on paperwallets. I don't really use other wallets. I've tried a few.

I use Coinbase.com wallet.

This is not a real wallet. You don't have access to the private keys. Any time you're moving coins, it's more like you're asking them to move it for you. If the site disappears, so will your coins.

I understand! I suggest you to use a normal wallet. Exchange isn't safe. If they go away or if they get hacked, your coin goes. So try to think about safety of your whole coins than some pennies. Use a wallet atleast for Bitcoin. :)
