Title: Mining coins from your phone
Post by: Hash Master on August 26, 2014, 12:36:18 AM
I see that the companies (like in any other tech field) are trying to reduce the size, but increase the quality.
Do you think that at some point the bitcoin mining can evolve into a process that can be executed by a smartphone or a device of that size without the need of extreme power supply? And what's the future of the bitcoin mining hardware?

It's already possible, but a little pointless and more of a novelty thing. ASICs are of course far more efficient than any other device when it comes to mining, they will produce the most hashes per watt used, and become more efficient as time progresses.

The primary point is that hashing, doing the work, has to be financially expensive and costly as that is what keeps the blockchain secure. If bitcoin or any other coin were secured by mobile device GPUs then mounting an attack with custom hardware would be very feasible and very cheap.

A hash matching a difficulty is just proof that some work has been done, it's the work itself that secures the blockchain.

There are already post where people use phone to mine coin, but the hash is so low that you shouldn't spoil your nice phone..

Yeah, my question was provoked more of the innovative aspect which involves minimalism in almost anything.

The only way I can see this work is if there is a smartphone coin, which you can only mine with a smartphone. Otherwise asic is like godzilla for smartphone..

Given the fact how many fans the altcoins have, maybe there really is no future for any other alternative of bitcoin lol

No, phones aren't suitable for mining Bitcoin. Mining Bitcoin really boils down to do stupid calculations in order to achieve a means of finding a consensus! Even if you integrated Bitcoin/SHA256 ASICs in phones, they'd need a lot of power. Why building those things into a phone? If people wanted to do that (which most won't) they would be better of with a dedicated device!

Just save up for a miner, I would imagine it would take forever comparing performance.

That would be fun, but then we would need the biggest smartphone to hash...

No, I was just wondering if this theory could be possible one day. Everything is getting to a pocket size, it's natural for the hardware to evolve into something that you can take on the go.

Lol, something like that would do the work then.

I think that it is possible because I saw a chart that shows the mining speeds of mobile procesors. Though not sure why you would want to even try this because it's pretty much pointless?

Again, I have no intentions of doing so. I was wondering if that theory could be physically developed one day. That's it. :)

Mining idea with old computer has been dead long ago and you are thinking about mining with your phone. It is really funny.

I tried scrypt mining from my Samsung Galaxy S3. I got like 0.2 khash/s. So, no, don't do it.

Nice, 0.2 khash/s. Now we need a smartphone coin and 0.2 khash/s might be among the highest..

Lol, I'd like to see the one actually succeeding in making a "smartphone exclusive coin"! :D
(Because it's not possible, since any computer can pretend to be one, just as all smartphones are computers)

Yep, wouldn't even be slightly hard to do (for someone with that kind of knowledge).

Totally very possible and easy to do.

The phone app have to identify itself passing the information thru the network. A programmer just have to listen the network "conversation" and learn what information is used to identify/authenticate it as a phone app and insert it into his fake phone app.

Bad idea. You need 2.1 million average smartphones to get a bitcoin.

The companies doesn't care about recycling, and they strongly dislike "reusing old devices".
They want to earn money.
