Title: Why to NOT consider AWS GPU cluster mining [summary analysis]
Post by: metonymous on May 08, 2011, 02:08:31 PM
I cleaned up my posted (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7403) review / analysis of AWS GPU cluster farming and posted it on my blog.

Cost Defective Mining with Amazon Web Services GPU Clusters (http://deadlink) (EDIT: dead link)

I hope you find my post informative!

I hope self promotion/pseudo-reposting is not too frowned upon. For the concerned, other justifications to repost: the title of my previous thread was extremely ambiguous; the content was spread between the posts; as the creator of the content I have the right to post it elsewhere, but am open to discussion of whether I should repost it here.

Thank you to bernd (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=11505) & error (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=4931) for their posts in the thread. Your input was appreciated.

I hope the $20 was helpful. :)

You didn't actually spend $500 did you?!

You could have run each of them for an hour and received the same results, right?!

Google spreadsheets can actually be exported as nice embeddable HTML frames btw.

Also maybe take into account that Amazon prices will stay the same more or less, but difficulty might go up (= less BTC per Hashes/s) and BTC<-->USD exchange rates are volatile to say the least.

Wow, I'm really sorry :( I spent about $30 to figure that out, you gotta know when to walk away and know when to run!

Condolences appreciated :P

No, I didn't spend $500, but it was closer to 500 than 30... :\

Yeah, cut your losses early, it's good advice. I learnt a lot doing it, and am trying my hardest to use that as justification of the expenditure... I'm much more familiar with AWS now than before, and i'm heaps used to debian-based linux, and not so much yum based, so it was a learning experience getting all the stuff to compile and run properly; information that'll continue to be useful.

Live and learn, hopefully next time more cheaperly :P

I figure at least I'm making *new* mistakes (for me)!

Yep, as long as you're making *new* mistakes you qualify to be be officially SANE.

The background image you use makes it really hard to read.

Oh yeah. Tis perfect now.
