Title: Help! Need to transfer...
Post by: Cudaboy71 on April 09, 2012, 01:50:54 AM
I have lost the location of my old wallet and would like to know if I can transfer the balance from my old wallet to a new one. I have my receive address from my old wallet. Is there anyway to send my balance to my new address?

Sorry, but as with real wallets, if you lose your Bitcoin wallet, all the money in it is as good as gone unless you can find it again. Have you tried looking under the sofa cushions? Seriously though, how did you manage to lose it?

Lost the location of the wallet file on your PC? search your drive for wallet.dat.

Unless you can find the wallet file, your money is gone. Receiving addresses are no good.

Its a good idea to print out your wallet import keys and hide them well, so if you loose your wallet file, you can import your address into a new wallet.

Sorry you learned a lesson the hardware.

Without recovering the original wallet.dat (either from backup or from the original corrupt/damaged file) then your coins are lost.

If you think for a second this obviously has to be the case.  If just having a receiving address gave you control of the coins then anyone could steal anyone's coins instantly as public address (keyword PUBLIC) is available to anyone.
