LAKE SELIGER Russia (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Friday Russia's armed forces, backed by its nuclear arsenal, were ready to meet any aggression, declaring at a pro-Kremlin youth camp that foreign states should understand: "It's best not to mess with us."

Putin told the assembly, on the banks of a lake near Moscow, the Russian takeover of Crimea in March was essential to save a largely Russian-speaking population from Ukrainian government violence. He said continued fighting in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists launched an uprising in April, was the result of a refusal by Kiev to negotiate.

Ukraine, and Western governments, accuse Russia of sending troops and armor to back the separatists in a conflict that has already killed over 2,000 people. Russia denies the charge.

"Russia is far from being involved in any large-scale conflicts," he said at the camp on the banks of Lake Seliger. "We don't want that and don't plan on it. But naturally, we should always be ready to repel any aggression towards Russia.

He's just talking big at the youth center. Russia doesn't to use its nukes as that will result in its assured destruction.

Nukes as weapons are worthless, in fact, less than worthless. They consume societal capital thereby reducing living standards of any nation that touches them. Picture two people at opposite ends of a fuel tank threatening each other with striking a match. Nukes for energy is a different story. There's 26 million times the energy of fossil fuel at the molecular level. If we could stop the boys playing with guns and matches, our scientists could use the help creating something useful.

The word world war 3 has been thrown around alot in 2014. It's kind of getting scary because so many pieces of the puzzles are coming together.

I hate to say it, but it's WW3 time... It's imminent.. and this moment even China is displaying their arsenal of weapons to the world. All that will remain will be memories of a time of chaos, ruined dreams. Folks, learn how to prepare!

You need nukes so others don't fuck with you. Ukraine got rid of their nukes because the EU, the US and Russia signed a deal to protect their borders. See where that got them. No country ever will now get rid of their nukes (and they shouldn't). I'm very happy the US is not the only country with nukes (even though I don't trust the Russians or Chinese either).

China is just another gorilla pounding its own chest.

A strong nation will stay quiet and not do something this stupid and display their power to the world.

This deal never was ratified by any side of memorandum, even by ukraine inself... So it has no judicial power and ukrainian side has the right to get their nukes back. But I guess that nobody will send it back.

In the animal kingdom, showing ones strength is to deter others from trying anything.

This is exactly correct. The fact that a country has nukes as part of their military capabilities, makes it much less likely that other large, rational countries will attempt to attack them. Nukes likely will/have lead to a fewer number of wars.

Also, even in your example it is unlikely that either party would light the tanker on fire as the result is that they would both likely die/burn.

Nuclear is a very dangerous weapon, impact of nuclear can be felt for many years and generations, we take the example of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, after being exposed to nuclear radiation, in addition to a lot of dead, there is also a victim of defective due to radiation until now, defects due to radiation is very difficult to cure, it takes research and therapy for years ...
hopefully government's policy to only utilize nuclear energy needs not to make weapons ...  8)

Seems like its stalemate if everyone has nukes.  We just end up with stronger set of borders until things change within each country.

Or blame things which happen on 'non-state' actors. An aircraft goes down in Ukranian air space and we still haven't fixed responsibility!

I say if shit does go down us lot should take the approach the Ukrainian Anarchists have, move away from the conflict between Russian and the U.S, build a base, stick up a flag, relax and let these two assholes kill each other.

Exactly. The mutually assured destruction doctrine is based upon the assumption that the leader who controls the nukes cares enough about his/her subjects.

A dictator will starve right down to his very last subject!

Perhaps not. Most people care about themselves though :)
