Title: Butterfly labs singles, any reports on noise?
Post by: jjshabadoo on April 10, 2012, 08:42:05 PM
For those of you who own them, how does the cooling fan compare to a single gpu fan at say 85% ?

Is the stock cooling pretty effective as well? I've seen some threads about people wishing they could do some mods there.

Thanks for those of you who already own them and can comment.

I'm thinking about settling on 4 rigs with a mix of 5970's and 5870's and just adding some fpga's over time to improve efficiency, reduce noise and cut down on cooling needs.

You can't really compare them to noisy GPU cooling, although they are audible in a silent office.

Actually, they're pretty noisy. Quite a bit louder than I was expecting. They gotta hefty Sunon fan in there.

Probably depends on which revision you have.
I just received Rev.3 and it's not noisy at all - yes, you can hear it, but you can have a quiet conversation next to it.

I have the rev3s, both of mine make some sound. Not vacuum cleaner loud, but louder then my PC.

My rev1 is way louder than HD5970 in free air. Maybe it's not louder but it makes that annoying whine. HD5970 just makes simple and neutral hiss sound.
I have 11 GPU-s whirring and single BFL made the noise considerably louder.

It has two large fans and one tiny fan in the middle. This design does not look good.
