Title: MSI Big Bang-Marshal Holy Crap
Post by: grndzero on May 09, 2011, 12:04:45 AM
Anyone else see this yet?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130595

You still can't put more than 4 double size cards on it, but 8 PCI-E slots on board?!

You could use all 8 slots with extenders...

Good luck with stability though.  I can't imagine that running 8 cards full-bore would work 100% of the time.  Or at least, I wouldn't bet my money on it.

what's the point of x16 pcie? just get a board with lots of 1x pcie slots :p (hint: mining does not use a lot of bandwidth)

It's packed with eight Tesla cards, but... it's still a quite awe-inspiring sight: http://www.colfax-intl.com/ms_tesla.asp?M=102&gclid=CKLH_77GxagCFUGHDgodvyvWpA  ;D

Wow. I would love to hear the sound of this 8-card PUPPY under load .. :)

- PCI_E1 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E3 is empty)
- PCI_E2 supports up to PCIE x1 speed
- PCI_E3 supports up to PCIE x8 speed
- PCI_E4 supports up to PCIE x1 speed
- PCI_E5 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E7 is empty)
- PCI_E6 supports up to PCIE x1 speed
- PCI_E7 supports up to PCIE x8 speed
- PCI_E8 supports up to PCIE x1 speed
- If you intend to install two expansion cards, it is recommended to install them into PCI_E1 & PCI_E5 slots.

Dreams, crushed.

Bitcoining only needs PCIe x1.

so why pay for a expensive motherboard, when you can get a cheaper one, that has the same amount of pcie x1 slots?

The PHYSICAL slots need to be x16.  The actual SPEEDS of the I/O of the slot only needs to be PCIe x1.

nope, just get 1x to 16x extender, or cut the end off.

Oh... didn't realize you could do that.  :D

EDIT:  When you say cut the end off, you mean the end of the slot, right?

So, what boards have 8x PCIe-1x ? slots?  (you can use them via extenders/hacksaw)

In my world, a mobo with 8 PCI-Ex16 ALL ACTUALLY RUNNING AT x16, would be perfect.

though i'm iffy on speeds... so i worry putting anything bigger into a slow slot...

Care to show us a board with 8 PCI-E x1 slots? As far as I know, I've never came across one.

So far from many members replies i learnt, if you have enough power to give cards, x1 or x8 or x16 doesn't matter.
Certified PSU with some percentage of watts more than you actually need even after over clocking must run cards perfectly.
