Title: [closed] Cryptonite name change poll
Post by: bitfreak! on September 01, 2014, 06:37:06 AM
Voting closed, see this post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=764976.msg8633932#msg8633932

Ok I want to settle this Cryptonite (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=713538) naming issue once and for all and I think the only way to do that is by letting people vote on it. Apparently some people think the name Cryptonite is too similar to the name Cryptonote, which is the technology behind a family of altcoins like Bytecoin and Monero. There is also a PoW algorithm called CryptoNight typically used by Cryptonote coins. Cryptonite has no relation to any of these technologies and some people think the name should be changed to avoid confusion.

Personally I am very reluctant to change the name because Cryptonote and CryptoNight are only names for technologies and algorithms, there isn't actually any altcoin with a name which sounds like Cryptonite. I also don't want to go to all the effort of changing the name if the new name isn't something original and unlikely to increase confusion instead of dampening it. I also quite like the logo and branding we have now, a reasonable amount of time and money was spent on it, but I don't think this debate will end until we vote on it.

New name voting options:

1) Cryptonite (keep same name)
2) Minicoin (base on mini-blockchain scheme)
3) Crypton (simply remove the 'ite')
4) Other

Voting will be done by posting in this thread, just post which option you want to vote for. If you choose option 4 please specify the name you want. To prevent spam votes you must have registered more than a month ago and have at least 100 posts in order to vote. Voting will last for 5 days 48 hours and then I'll add up all the numbers. I reserve the right to cancel the name change if I don't like the result.

Some things to keep in mind: Minicoin is a good descriptive name but it was also the name of an old altcoin which now seems to be dead, but remnants of it remain on the internet and at the top of Google search results. Clipcoin is a decent choice because it is compatible with the existing currency code (XCN) and hasn't been used before, but I personally don't think Clipcoin is a very professional name at all.

My vote is to keep the same name (option 1).

Option 4.

But i got no good suggestion. The current options are not that good either.

The name should be more related to your main innovation- the mini block chain.

I like Minicoin OK, but would be open to hearing some other ideas along these lines. :)

Cryptonite is a cool name, but it is somewhat unrelated to your cryptocurrency.

Either way I guess I don't really care..

How about Diminutive Coin.

Sound more classy than mini coin. But both mean the same thing.

Diminutive means
extremely or unusually small.

Cryptonite is a cool name, but it is somewhat unrelated to your cryptocurrency.
The name doesn't always have to be descriptive of the product. How does the name Apple help describe Apple computers? If you must apply some sort of meaning to the name Cryptonite, I like to think of it as a powerful and exotic substance, in the same way you might think of Unobtanium as a super rare substance, but obviously Cryptonite is not so rare. It is very exotic compared to all other coins though, it's very different in a fundamental way, and that difference gives it unparalleled scalability/power.

I choose curent name (Option 1). It made history of altcoins - no need changing it...

there isn't actually any altcoin with a name which sounds like Cryptonite.

That's true.  As long as you don't count CryptoKnight - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=274766.0

PS Vote for MiniCoin - Because It's Good EnoughTM

(I think minicoin is alright though, just not worth the hassle to change)

I think option 1 isn't good as it may confuse people whatever you are talking about - a coin or an algorithm.
If you'd like to know my point of view - I'd say that Minicoin is good name for a coin.
Diminutive Coin sounds a lit bit pathetic. Minicoin sounds much better.

Had been away, so didn't have much of a chance to put in some comments or additional name options in the ann thread ahead of this post.
In any case, I'm picking option 4. With the motto of 'endless possibilities ahead', and how the mini blockchain breaks free of the restrictions of the typical (bloated) blockchain implementations, my suggestion is nebarita, which is esperanto for unbounded.

Cheers,

2 - but really mini or micro or nano anything: microblock, minichain, nanohash, etc. I'd even go for millipede over cryptonite.

I like Crypton too, the only problem with that name is none of the domains are available. Even the .io domain is taken.

I just purchased cryptoncoin.com so Crypton is now a totally acceptable option. Since no one has voted for Clipcoin yet, I'll replace that option with Crypton.

i vote for cryptonite.

no better name has been proposed yet and the only reason to make the switch now would be a better name. imo everything new that ends with 'coin' is just going to drown in the sea of cloneCOINs, even if it has unique features or a completely new codebase.

I vote for minicoin -IF- you can get the .com or .org domain (preferably both). I do not think changing the name is as much of a priority as some people make it out to be. Cryptonite will suffice.

I also was brainstorming earlier, and i think bonsai would be a good name (referring to the pruning that is done to keep the blockchain small), but of course getting domains for this would be impossible.

So what about Saicoin?

Minicoin is alright. But you can probably think of better names.

I'd vote for option 4.

But I definitely agree that the name Cryptonite has major conflict issues with CryptoNote/Night.

Title: Re: Cryptonite name change poll
Post by: exciter0 on September 01, 2014, 03:49:13 PM
I hold more XMR than XCN, and I certainly don't want a name change.
I vote option 1, keep Cryptonite name.

Frankly, I was more confused with cryptonight and cryptonote names when I first heard about Monero.

Title: Re: Cryptonite name change poll

Current vote count:

Cryptonite - 7
Minicoin - 5
Crypton - 3
Other - 4

As a point of order, it probably would have been better to first vote on whether or not the name should be changed, and then, depending on the result, vote for what to change it to.

As it stands, keeping the same name would currently win with the most votes, even though there is a clear majority of people who want to change the name (12 using this data), they just don't agree on what it should be changed to.

Option 4;

I suggest 'MiniCrypt'

The name leaves some connection to Cryptonite and is more suggestive of the Mini-Blockchain technology. Also is doesn't sound like anything Superman/Cryptonote related.

Crypton.  Just because its the only concrete proposal which doesn't pun on cryptonight, which is a completely different thing and should not be mis-associated to XCN.  Also, since it works with XCN so there's no major problem for exchanges.

Title: Re: Cryptonite name change poll
Post by: iCEBREAKER on September 02, 2014, 12:18:39 AM
option 2, Minicoin or Minichain

this is also called Kryptonite https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=606682.0

::)  OK, this is just getting ridiculous!  Have we covered every possible permutation yet?  Is there a Cript O'Nyte lurking out there too?   :D

So at last count there are THREE coins (one dead, two alive) with a name that is phonetically identical, plus almost identical CyptonOte's POW, which is also another Cryptonight.

Tell me more about how there are no naming collisions...  ;D

Regardless of outcome, I appreciate BF putting the poll up.  But it seems hasty to conduct it over a long holiday weekend, and without a proper run-off to narrow down the best two candidates.

If BF wanted to make sure nothing changed, a sudden holiday poll that dilutes undesired votes for a different name among multiple challengers (including 'OTHER') would be a good way to do it.  I don't think that was intentional, but the optics stink.  :P

We should have a run off between the top two, after everyone gets back/comes down from Burning Man.

I say lose the "coin" part and call it MicroChain or MicroNite  :)

Title: Re: Cryptonite name change poll
Post by: iCEBREAKER on September 02, 2014, 01:49:14 AM
there is no other coin pronounced exactly like Cryptonite

There are (at last count) THREE other coins pronounced and/or spelled exactly like Cryptonite.  Two are dead, one is very much alive.

I'm shocked there is not yet a 'KryptoNight' and 'CryptoKnite.'  Well, give it a day or two and they will pop up...  :D

Kryptonite  - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=606682.0
Cyptonite - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=700039.0
CryptoKnight - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=274766.0

Now you clearly have to change your vote to MiniCoin.   ;)

I say lose the "coin" part and call it MicroChain or MicroNite  :)

I'm OK with 'MiniChain' but having a '-coin' suffix is an advantage.  We play with coins as children and this grounding experience provides a rich conceptual field from which we can create metaphors to apply to non-physical crypto currencies.  It's also nice to share/inherit the BitCoin family naming convention.

A name like "Crypton" does not invoke that very descriptive and useful 'coin' schema/vocabulary.  Plus it sounds like the crappy old unstable planet where Superman's family and entire race (minus Zod and Supergirl) died horribly.

Title: Re: Cryptonite name change poll

Between Minicoin and Cryptonite, I'd rather keep Cryptonite. Minicoin clearly shows no innovation and creativity. Changing the name just because MINI-BLOCKCHAIN + BITCOIN = MINICOIN... well I've said enough.

As for iCEBREAKER, jeez, you are never happy about anything. Now complaining about how the poll is done. Makes me think that you probably have something to lose if MICIcoin is not selected.  ;D OH yes I forgot you already purchased the domain names and have been trying to brainwash everyone with the MINICOIN name ;D

Bitfreak, simply keep Cryptonite and let's put this to rest once and for all. This is becoming utterly RIDICULOUS and as things are going a waste of time for your and catia.

Title: Re: Cryptonite name change poll
Post by: darkota on September 02, 2014, 02:15:23 AM
I have to agree, cryptonite resembles kryptonite, and can easily get confused with Superman's kryptonite or the other coins named kryptonite.

But I also think minicoin is a bad name. Anything with the word coin in it, (aside from bitcoin and prob darkcoin) sounds very childish and toylike.

Changing the name just because MINI-BLOCKCHAIN + BITCOIN = MINICOIN... well I've said enough.

As for iCEBREAKER, jeez, you are never happy about anything. Now complaining about how the poll is done.

I wasn't the first to complain about the name, nor was I immediately receptive to the idea of changing it.

And nobody ever said we're changing the name "just because MINI-BLOCKCHAIN + BITCOIN = MINICOIN."

Rather, we wish to gauge community support for a re-brand because of the inconvenient naming collisions with Cryptonote, Kryptonite, etc.

I'm happy about lots of things (EG Bitcoin, Monero, Boolberry, and MiniCoin's potential), and I wasn't the first to question the execution of the poll.

You are an intensely dishonest person polanskiman.  You intentionally misrepresented my positions in no less than three ways in a single post.

If you can't debate what was actually said and have to distort the record, it's an admission that your side of the argument is lacking substantive merit.

Ok I'm going to stop this poll early because I've decided what's going to happen. At this rate Cryptonite is going to win by a large margin, and a large group of people will still be unhappy. Since I now own cryptoncoin.com I offer this solution: the official shortened version of the name is now Crypton, so those people who think it's confusing to call it Cryptonite can now refer to it as Crypton or even CryptonCoin if they like. I think this is the best solution we're going to get, I can't do much more to please everyone.

Thanks for giving me the idea!

You are seriously a deranged mind. There is a proverb that says: what goes around comes around...

This is how I respond to threats, even cowardly indirect ones:

Threats?  :D - Indeed again and again you prove you are a deranged individual. Poor you.

Your lack of maturity and misplaced optimism are only hurting you, not others - Even less me.

OK, since you insist I'll add more content to the unmoderated DMD thread.   :D

Ok, so CryptoBithereumDarkSharesLite is now available if anybody wants to us it.

I could hardly read it  :D

IMO this is the worst name I have ever heard for a coin!

Why are you taking so long to decide what name to choose ??? and what then will be in the future when you decide whether to add or not some features to the coin???!

Have you carefully read the topic? - It says [CLOSED] - Read above quote.
