Title: $500,000 USD to invest, What should I invest in?
Post by: Epiu on September 02, 2014, 10:27:04 PM
I'm have over $500,000 USD to invest in coins.

My question is, what is the best coin, is your favorite investment choice for the future?
I will gladly invest my 500k, but i need solid answers on why so-and-so coin is the future.

BTCD
There are so many reasons that I can't even start to sum them all up.
But just browse through the thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=684090.0;topicseen (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=684090.0;topicseen)
$500k would buy you a good chunk of the 1.3 million total coins, too.  Potential to 10x your investment for sure, unlike lots of these altcoins.

Monero.
Reasons: Excellent anonymity. Currently sits on 5th spot on www.Coingecko.com but only 11 on www.coinmarketcap.com
This means that Monero is undervalued right now.

Here is a comparison I made with Monero v.s other coins.

First. Let's look at Blackcoin a pump and dump currently at 16 spot at Coinmarketcap. Chart indicates two peaks, with no rebound and currently falling more for every day. Notice the low volume after the initial two pump and dumps. It is incredibly small.
https://i.imgur.com/RdOxvO7.png

Secondly let's look at Xcurrency. An incredible huge pump and dump with zero volume except it's initial peak. This train crashed already at first station.
https://i.imgur.com/23UhJOU.png

And now let's take a look at Monero.  USD marketcap is once again reaching it's previous all time high and volume is there. This tells that demand for XMR is still very high for it's current price.

Fun times.

With that kind of cash, you could literally invest in ANY altcoin, work the market into a frenzy, and then get out, probably with a substantial profit.  But I still wouldn't do it...

Put half of it into a really clean concours condition classic car.

May I suggest one of the early E-type Jaguars:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Cars-/9801/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=jaguar+e-type&_sop=16

Or whatever you like. Almost impossible to lose money on classic cars, and the market for E-types is exploding again.

Then put $100k into BTC, and look around for a small handful of sane alt-coins to invest in.
BTCD, NXT (and its asset coins), Boolberry, probably LTC would be recomendations, but every one will pump their favourites.

Basically, don't invest $500,000 based on the advice from anyone on this forum: do your research, take your time and spread your investments around.

Edit: Or, yeah, just give some to jl777. I've seen the results of his work over the last 6-7 months and I'm impressed.

He seems to be a reputable person and he's been paying dividend to investors for a long time now.  Inform me what's so bad about him or if there is anyone better?

Otherwise OP's alternative is to invest for himself and the safer bets there tend to be innovative 2.0 coins like BTCD, NXT, NEM, NODE, et cetera.  Especially with the amount of money he is investing he could also hit up lesser amounts into Monero, Quark, et al.

Be very careful! A lot of 'advice' you'll get is from people holding the coin they endorse. That doesn't automatically mean they're just trying to push their coin on you, if they think a coin will do well, of course they'll buy some. Anyway I recommend that you don't invest such a large sum into cryptocurrency, it's still an evolving concept. If you're into the high-risk-high-reward nature of cryptocurrency, take a look at Mazacoin. It's a Native American coin created to reinforce their sovereignty; they're doing some good stuff. If you decide to invest in a coin, be wary that the markets can be extremely volatile!

I would only say that you should do your own research and then some... and buy a bit of a bunch of promising coins.  It also might make more sense, its worth noting, to invest in a company in the alt-coin space rather than a specific coin.

Just my two cents.

I would not trust anyone in this thread, with that kind of money (if you are actually serious and not lying) you will want to contact the most knowledgable and respected people in crypto and ask of their opinion. I would certainly put most of that into BTC though. Don't listen to people in here promoting their shitcoins, clone coins, and bullshit claims.

also +1 nobody sane would invest this in the volatile world of altcoins other than you really know what you're doing but then again you certainly wouldn't open such a thread :D

First do your own research. This is critically important! Then and only then consider the following allocation:

25% XMR (Monero)

That's a good start, but you need LTC as a hedge against catastrophic Bitcoin failure and likewise BBR as a hedge against XMR.

You also want XCN as a hedge against all four of those, because it's the first coin to feature safe zero-confirmation transactions and a mini-blockchain.

Good question.

LTC offers a massive network hashrate backed by ASICs, making it the second most secure POW based blockchain.

You are new here, so you weren't around when a BTC update temporarily resulted in a fork last May.

The market reaction was predictable - BTC collapsed as its twin/hedge LTC exploded.

LTC also offers tremendous liquidity compared to other altcoins.  Little noobs may not appreciate that, but us old whales do.   ;)

And here is another feather in LTC's cap:  http://www.reddit.com/r/litecoin/comments/1oiyrz/litecoin_creator_and_btcchina_ceo_are_brothers/

Bitcoin for *at least* 95% of your funds.

Because:

... It should be somewhat clear that 99% of existing alts will lose 99% of their value over the next few years. Most alt "innovations" either aren't innovations (like tweaking blocktime or supply), don't work, don't scale, or don't matter. Furthermore, ninja-mining, pre-mining, ugly emission curves, 51%s, NaS attacks, etc, can all kill coins even if there *were* actual innovation. And further still, it's probably the case that if any meaningful, viable innovation ever gets done in the alt-space, bitcoin could eventually incorporate it, making the separate chain irrelevant.

You have to understand that bitcoin's innovation was 30yrs in the making. Solving distributed global consensus was a breakthrough in computer science. There has not been a single innovation in the alt space that even sorta compares to that. Not one. Which is why bitcoin is highly likely to remain dominant.

Furthermore, it's been well understood for the past 20-30yrs that if you could solve distributed global consensus, you could do digital cash, and it would be a big deal. It's just that no one had figured out how to solve double-spending (global consensus) prior to Satoshi. There is no similar known problem being attacked in the alt-space for which a solution would be a breakthrough of similar magnitude. So an alt would have to luckbox into some completely unforeseen yet incredible innovation.

So bitcoin likely remains the primary crypto-coin. That said, there *are* potential niches to be filled by alt-coins. The only one I can clearly identify is anonymity. It's clear that bitcoin does not offer meaningful anonymity unless the user is technically skilled enough and motivated enough to obfuscate their transaction chains sufficiently. Furthermore, bitcoin is becoming a global asset class, fit for corporate balance sheets and HNW portfolios. It's also obviously seeing high-profile merchant adoption, and tacit acceptance/approval by various governments and regulatory bodies. If bitcoin offered technically pure anonymity that required zero user effort, governments would probably be a lot more directly hostile towards it. Thus, it seems unlikely that the bitcoin community would embrace full-anon tech in bitcoin core; lest governments react harshly and reduce existing ecosystem investment value dramatically.

So that leaves the anonymity niche open to an alt. As I've previously noted, ever since Zerocoin was published, I thought that when it came out as a functional implementation, it'd be the first actually interesting alt-coin. Well, it looks like these CryptoNote coins have beaten it to the punch of functional anonymity. Which CN coin will win is a different matter. XMR seems out in front, but the waters are muddy still.

I don't see any other obvious niches for alts. Turing completeness is interesting in theory, but I wouldn't trust the security of such a chain for a quite a while, and much of the benefits may be possible in bitcoin anyway. Other than that.... ?

Now that's not to say you couldn't make a killing if you play the alt market perfectly, and jump from coin to coin as they fall in and out of favor. But good luck not losing your shirt.

tl;dr: Alts suck, with very few even theoretical exceptions.

All I can suggest is you pick the top coins that you believe have long term potential to grow.  Follow the community, charts, developers and chat rooms.  If you're going to do it think of it as a part time  job at least.  If you put the time into figuring out which coins are worth buying and when is a good time to buy you should do very well IMO.

There are a decent amount coins I think have potential, but best not picking one coin.  Diversify and play the market swings.

I will gladly invest my 500k, but i need solid answers on why so-and-so coin is the future.

Rental yield in US is quite high right now.

You can search hudstore and buy some extremely cheap homes up and fix them up to rent it out. ROI is quite high compare to other other investment vehicles.

I hope this wasn't a serious thread because 500,000 usd you can pretty much start your own coin with marketing and mining support but that what i would do with it anyways. just saying. plus maybe put some aside for bitcoin litecoin and doge the three titans of crypto.

There are already so many useless coins out there.

Putting money into useless products with high risk is not a good advice.

Imo.. Blackcoin because it has the highest chance of merchant / business adoption, widescale use.

reasons:
Fast confirmation times,
NO pure anonymity = good because it can be somewhat regulated & consumer protection.

another small plus is you get 1% yearly return - without having to buy mining equipment or other bs.

Point was with that kind of money you can start your own business with anything and include these coins as payment.

Dont invest it in an altcoin. If your going to invest that much money, put it in BTC or a real investment. I wouldn't trust that much money on a useless altcoin.

Fun times.

With that kind of cash, you could literally invest in ANY altcoin, work the market into a frenzy, and then get out, probably with a substantial profit.  But I still wouldn't do it...

get out is the hard part.

dont invest in anything other than BTC long term..Even that is looking more and more risky as time goes by.

With that sort of money you could easily play the markets and make more. Just need to pick the right coins. Need to make sure that the coin your investing in has enough buy support that you could easily dump which means that 99% of the coins are out of the equation.

Investing any substantial $ long term in alts is retarded at the moment. That being said you could make plenty of money on startup coins if you played your cards right and didnt saturate the market with buy/sells

I would only say that you should do your own research and then some... and buy a bit of a bunch of promising coins.  It also might make more sense, its worth noting, to invest in a company in the alt-coin space rather than a specific coin.

Just my two cents.
With this amount of money, I agree with the above. Or go by some real estate haha.

Well, you can still buy NEM-stakes via NXT-Asset-Exchange.

When you don't know anything about NEM:
