This looks like Braintree news.. Nothing in relation to PayPal/eBay.  This will allow merchants to accept Bitcoin payments via their mobile app..... FYI - let's not get too excited about this.

That doesn't mean it directly relates to PayPal or eBay just because they posted that...  When the keynote goes live we will see.

realistically, i think they will do a trial with braintree, and if all goes well, they'll spread it on over to paypal or ebay.

End result news we are all looking for...

"PayPal and/or eBay now accepts bitcoin payment" NOT "Braintree allows Uber customers to buy services in app with bitcoin".

BrainTree seems to be the architecture PayPal is now built upon. Sounds like for developers, this is bitcoin and paypal. Now, will the paypal interface devs get on board.

This means people using bitcoin on ebay by 2015 imo.

There is no reason why one subsidiary would accept bitcoin and the rest of the company would not. What would likely happen is any payments to be processed with the customer paying with bitcoin will be processed via braintree which will use coinbase to process the transaction (as per news articles that have reported the deal).

I just hate the fact you have to rely on coinbase for this one.   Like get with it.  Come with a solution that is easy and doesn't involve 3 degrees of separation with Coinbase/Braintree app/PayPal/etc.

This is what Bitcoin was built for, to be used as a protocol that people and companies can build on.

Crypto makes all 3 of these companies obsolete the only one left is paypal with their Insurance business,

I'd have to say any collaboration between these companies including ebay would possibly be more to do

with wallet software analysis and setting up minning/node infrastructure than anything.

They likely do not have any other way to buy/sell bitcoin in amounts that are needed to accept bitcoin. Coinbase has this infrastructure in place to be able to do this. There are also very few exchanges that could be trusted with as much money as eBay and other large corporations will be ultimately trusting with whatever service/exchange they use to convert their bitcoin to fiat. 

True.  Coinbase will have the liquid to help them in the cash out/conversion scenario.   Hey, by chance do you know if Coinbase now supports Canadian banks?  As of Jan/Feb they did not and didn't have plans....  Would be interesting to find out.

Coinbase give them a easy safe way in. If it works out, they'll buy out coinbase. If it doesn't work out, they'll cut ties and be out very little. It's a smart business plan.

PayPal to buy Coinbase?  That is a scary thought....  Seriously - I think that is the only way for PayPal to remain a business unit as a whole moving forward (5-10 years).

The way I see it, PayPal can adapt Bitcoin and make the best of it, albeit with smaller profits, or.... Paypal can ignore and get smashed by it later down the road putting it out of business.  I think Paypal has chosen "if you can't beat them, then join them" in a proactive decision. 

And yes, if they don't buy Coinbase, they are going to buy somebody.

There is a number of ways they could implement it. It could be used as a deposit method. This would be a net negative for exchange rate. That could also allow it as a withdrawal method. A net positive. I would like to see paypal accounts denominated in BTC. Just like others can pay you USD using their CAD (for example). Paypal does the exchange, and take a cut on that as well as the payment. This would be a very serious positive for the price of bitcoin.

For some reason I don't think PayPal will announce officially on their end in 2015... that is just my take - this is still years away.

Right. All Braintree is doing is adding the ability to use Coinbase Bitcon->fiat conversions to Braintree's shopping cart program. Braintree isn't handling Bitcoins at all.

It would be better if Braintree were handling Bitcoins themselves.  Coinbase seems sketchy. Has anybody found out where they really are?  Their published addresses are a mail drop on Market St. in SF and somebody's apartment.

Why are bitcoin companies so secretive about their address?  Notice how like 90% of any bitcoin'ish company does not post that information on their website?

They probably don't want people watching their Bitcoin holdings.  It's likely they feel a need for privacy at this time and I respect that.  I'm sure some people would suggest there is reason for them to be more transparent but I'm sure there is a good argument/discussion to be had on the matter.

Yeah sure, but it effectively allows all companies who work together with Braintree, to accept Bitcoin in the future. It just needs to transcend through the different levels of service providers up to the merchants that deal with the customers!

They use a different address for each transaction. This is how they keep track of when a customer pays for their order. Also most companies will end up selling their bitcoin as soon as coinbase/bitpay allows so their address is kind of a moot point.
