Title: [4BTC] Assemble a PirateBox for me and send it to me
Post by: bitdragon on April 21, 2012, 10:18:59 PM
I'm looking for someone to whom I could send a TP-Link WR703N and a USB stick
and this person will Load up a functioning service of a http://wiki.daviddarts.com/PirateBox_DIY_OpenWrt (http://wiki.daviddarts.com/PirateBox_DIY_OpenWrt)

And send it to me, in the US :)
Ideally, this includes shipping to a US address.

Anyone up for it?

it looks straightforward indeed.
I have never done it myself though nor anything like it.

Let me know

That looks awesome :D I'd do it for 3.777btc!

Additionaly, I have experiance loading custom firmwares onto routers, and if done incorrectly, it can brick them, which renders them nearly irrepairable. (Although I have unbricked a few for friends :P)

I accept the offer for 3.777btc
I will order the two and get them shipped to your place, you fix it up and send it over !
Ideally packed right back in the same router box with a little USB stick attached :)

If acceptable for you, I will send the bitcoins once you claim the setup complete. Is that fair? Otherwise, please suggest something else;

Looking forward and thank you in advance!

Yes, I agree to that, considering you're taking the bigger risk by sending me the routers.

I'll PM you my address.

Also, in the OP you used singular terms, implying you want one router configured. I thought I might exploit that and give you the choice of sending me 3.777btc once or twice :P

if this goes well, I will gladly do it again.
Thanks for PM and we'll be in touch shortly.

Wow... that looks badass

Can two pirateboxes connect to expand the network size?

If they can, that's a whole new level of badassery!

They probably don't but you should contact the dev about that.

You technically wouldn't need a 2nd entire PirateBox, just a wifi extender, which a lot of routers can be configured to act as with the right firmware. If it can run the PirateBox firmware it can probably run dd-wrt/openwrt/tomato etc and act as a range extender. Theoretically, since the PirateBox firmware runs over the top of one of these firmwares (openwrt I think?) it should be possible to configure it thusly, though the menu options associated with such a configuration might not be present.

I read "the two" as meaning the router and the USB stick, not two routers. Perhaps the OP can clarify.

Yes, a repeater is easy, but I think we were thinking of actually integrating the two on a deeper level. Ex. see both box's files in one web page.

Indeed, I meant the 2 as in the router and a USB stick.

Anyone willing to create more of these? I would be interested to buy also, too lazy to assemble it myself :D

Maybe if someone can produce lots of these, he can sell them on bitmit.net and turn profit :D

Yeah I'll make a few for whoever wants them. Just let me know.
If I get a few orders I might consider that, but because different people will want different things, like flash drive vs. hdd, it might be better to stick to individual orders. If enough interest is shown I'll start a thread for this.

Well, I decided already to do the work myself and ordered the hardware myself... Maybe next time :)

I may be interested in this service also. I convinced my rescue squad commander to try out a piratebox on our next collapsed structure event. It occurred to me that if I were trapped in a collapsed building, I would try to get an Internet connection to contact someone.  It could save lives to initiate a simple chat with victims.
I may build one, but time is always a problem. If it works well in training/tests I will pursue funding for a scaled up version. We have people with the right radio licenses to run a high powered wifi.

I love it, I'm definitely going to build myself one!

I just got your flash drive in the mail today, and I also made a AA power supply for the box.

https://i.imgur.com/kb1VI.jpg

If you want the custom power supply, all I ask is the cost of parts + 1 coin. It includes a diode so you can still power it traditionally over USB without a problem.

I'll have one extra for sale soon. Cost of parts + 4btc!

How long does it run on batteries? Shouldn't you have 4 Aa for higher voltage? Does the usb cable charge the battery pack?

What is the total cost of parts?

That picture might be a little hard to see, but there are six AAs for a total of 9v, and a 5v regulator. So they should last quite a while, but I'll do some testing next week. I'll also test an 8AA pack.

The usb cable does not charge the pack, it is only for powering the router with the included wall plug.

Router - $40

Battery pack - $8
Voltage regulator $4
Battery clip - $4

Shipping - ~$8

Total parts: $64 or ~13btc

Edit: I left out the flash drive. That's $15 for a compact 16gb.

Got my PirateBox today, thanks Garrett!

The tab on the regulator gets a bit warm, so I might add my own heatsink to it.

Update, these Tp-link boxes are glued together so they are hard to get apart.  >:(
However, I attached a heatsink to the regulator and shoved it inside of the box. ;D
Too bad the mini-USB can't be easily moved inside the box, if it was a regular connector I would be able to solder directly to the pins inside, but it is an SMT USB connector which is a pain. This forces me to have a pigtail running outside the box around the edge to the mini-USB port:

Anyways, better than nothing. :D

Thanks for the review, rjk.

It is a bummer that it can't be completely self contained aside from the battery. You could use an elbow and some smaller wire to clean it up a bit, though.

Thanks all!

Ive been looking for something like this as I sometimes go to Melbourne and sit at the city square with a solar powered generator and let people charge their mobiles and laptops. Running a piratebox from solar would be a nice extra :)

So does that mean I should order another? :P

I just ordered three more routers and enough parts for five more battery power supplies.

These should be ready to go next week. Two of them will be extras in stock.

If using six or more AA batteries in conjunction with the regulator, I recommend purchasing a TO-220 heatsink for it.

I will be ordering ten of these but they won't arrive for a few weeks.

Is there anyone with one of these set up that has a Watt meter, or one of those wall wattmeters they can plug it into while pulling a file from it...  Would love to know the typical draw..

I know the wall adapter is 1 amp, but im curious about the draw so I can find a suitable solar solution..

Thanks! :)

I was asked how the cost adds up to 19btc today, and here's the answer:

http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-Portable-802-11n-Wireless-TL-MR3020/dp/B006DEBXD0 - Router - $40
http://www.amazon.com/7805-5V-Voltage-Regulator-TO-220/dp/B0002ZPXJ6/ - vReg - $5
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Fit-Flash-Drive/dp/B005FYNSZA/ - 16gb drive - $14
http://www.amazon.com/Parts-Express-9V-Battery-Clip/dp/B0002ZPFU8 - Battery clip - $3
http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Holder-Standard-Snap-Connector/dp/B000LFRTIK/ - Battery holder - $8
Total $70 / 5.10 = 14btc + 4btc build fee + 1btc shipping = 19btc

Hopefully 19 sounds more appealing now!

If you compare it to anyone else offering pre-setup pirate boxes, its slightly cheaper with you..

Shipping from UK is a bit nuts price wise from your competitor..

$32 to this to Australia. Or, if I ship to one of you then you forward it to the other, it will cost me $36.20 which you can split.

Only legal implications are, if you choose to put pirated or copywritten stuff on it.

If you dont, its perfectly legal.

If you do... who the hell is going to catch you ?   specially if its outta site and not on a table in front of you.

My Pirate box came today. I will try to find time to work on it this weekend. The next step it to ssh into the box and begin modding. This guide is what I am going to use.
http://piratebox.aod-rpg.de/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=modification_list

It did not come with a battery pack, not sure why? A trip to Radio Shack should solve that. Here is what it looks like.
