Title: Difficulty?
Post by: IlbiStarz on May 09, 2011, 09:26:26 PM
So the difficulty just changed about a minute ago from about 100000 to 157000...

However, on bitcoin charts, it says : Estimated   629666 in 2016 blks

HOLY WTF?!

It has adjusted, but this is partly due to the phenomena that I mentioned in my topic.

It's already down to 324k.  It's probably just because there was randomly several blocks found within minutes of the difficulty switchover.  It'll even out over time to the proper difficulty rate.

How can I tell if my gpu is actually mining correctly? I've been mining for about 7 days on my 6990 and nothing has happened. Are you supposed to see something on the bitcoin application, or do you see something from the command prompt..or what.

I would go with a mining pool IlbiStarz... that way, you can be sure that your GPU is doing something, as you'll see the results updated as soon as a share is sent in.

C'mon read the forums. With a question like that you are most certainly mining with your CPU. Go check out the mining forum. Get a GPU miner and join a pool.

Regarding the GPU load google for msi afterburner for instance. It show gpu load and some other stuff.

I was in a pool before, but I wanted to try solo, and I don't want all the time soloing gone to waste, so I'm waiting for that first block.

I know it's mining correctly, the gpu load is 100%. But...how can I tell if it's actually done anything on blocks or w.e.?

The projected difficulty isn't accurate right after a difficulty increase. Give it about half a day to settle down. Then remember that it will start climbing back up slowly as the network continues to grow.

Oh. I thought that its impossible to mine solo with a gpu.

According to http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php you should get 50btc within:
Probability   Time
Average   7 days, 18 hours, 30 minutes
50%   5 days, 9 hours, 16 minutes
95%   23 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes

My guess that your block should pop soon:) Thats all I can help you with.

Yeah now it's about 200k.

Give it about 12 hours, at least.

Although if the next difficulty jump is as large as the last one, it's going to be over 220K difficulty.

It doesn't work that way. Each hash is a completely new attempt. If your average time to find a block is (say) 23 days, and you haven't found a block in 22 days, your average time to find a block is still another 23 days from that point onwards.

The average still holds, because sometimes you will find a block in less than 23 days.

But any work you've done without finding a block has already "gone to waste". You don't work your way towards some solution. Instead, millions of times each second, you throw away the previous work and try another solution to see if it's a good one.
