Van Halen and AC/DC were my favorite party bands up until the mid 80's, but they both went downhill after that.

Metallica are the gods of heavy metal. Pink Floyd was the best of psychedelic rock.

You have to give The Rolling Stones credit just for being around as long as they have been and still going strong. Seriously, it's a miracle Keith Richards is even alive!

Foo Fighters! Everlong is simply the best Rock song there is. It combines everything a good song just has to have! Have you seen the video of that song? It's great, it's full of dream-sequences where people imagine weird stuff like hands swelling up...

R.E.M. or Queen, led zeppelin stole most of the songs and pink floyd may run with these two.

Yeah, foo fighters, besides the great songs, the ehole band is uplifting and  Dave is just an amazing musician and a person.

Update: If you have ever heard real musicians play through real equipement(Les Paul guitar through a Marshall plexi amp and a Fender bass played through a 1972 ampeg SVT bass amp and a five piece drum kit with a percussion player next to him keeping it so real) there is an atmosphere and a feeling involved that can not be recorded on an album.

If you have never heard the music above played correctly and with emotions through the right equipment while the musicians improvise into left field and memorize the crowd into a trance before returning back from that magical journey, you problably would not agree with my choices. But if you have, you know what's up!

I've always enjoyed anything from The Killers. Favorite song from them would be Sam's Town. The intro is great.

I also like Led Zeppelin. Favorite from them was How the West Was Won.

Tool is also a great band. I enjoyed Vicarious and listened to it a lot on repeat.

Pink Floyd is the best soft rock band, LZ is the best arena rock, and Beatles are best pop rock, for sure.

But GNR wins for sheer volume of glorious sex/drugs/hard rock in one amazing album.  Plus they flamed-out early and dissolved in a cloud of conflict, like a real rock band should, instead of milking it for years or decades past their prime like the Stones.  And Axl started a bunch of riots!   8)

Best Metal band is Ministry.  The Napster-suing emo whiners of Metallica are vastly overrated, unless you are in middle school and don't know better.

No matter which is the best, they MUST have great art work depicted on their album covers.

I hope you're not being uptight with the word 'rock' because my favorite band of all time is Nirvana  ;) To this day I haven't found any bands/singers that can rival Kurt's intensity.
Honorable mention goes to Layne Staley though, that guy's voice on the AIC MTV unplugged is the best I've heard in rock, period.
