I don't understand what's a big deal? OK, they accept it, but how many people do actually choose to pay in bitcoin at Overstock rather then to use credit/debit cards?

Looks like it isn't a load of crap this time, they have Bitcoin logos and stuff on their UK website now.

Of course it's a big deal. It's a massive deal for us and the community. They've actually sold millions of dollars worth of stuff in bitcoins. We need more and more merchants accepting btc for the currency to grow so it doesn't matter how much they are taking in today, but the option is there if you want to spend your coins.

Isn't all their stuff shipped from American warehouses? I think Overstock and it's CEO are great but it doesnt have anything on Amazon in the UK yet.

yeah, I've realised that looking at the shipping costs, but it's something at least, personally I'm going to be using scan.co.uk for most of my electronic purchases but if I want something else in Bitcoin that's bigger than that since they have all sorts of furniture and stuff it may be worth it buying from them :P

Yeah, import taxes will hit you on anything over £30 as well. Royail Mail have a habit of paying it for you then charging you like a £10+ 'fee' on top of it for the privilege.

My only worry is that they may just decide to lump all the costs on to the businesses which they could well do because they have to register everything, I hadn't thought about this deeply until now but we'll have to see what happens, at least they definitely won't be able to do anything about digital files.

My only concern is that Overstock can't offer the prices which other online retail giants such as Amazon and Ebay are offering. For example, I have chekced the prices of some laptops. On average they are 5-10% more expensive. Also, international shipping is very expensive. Even more expensive, when we add up all the duties and taxes.

Amazon and Ebay dont sell directly to consumers. Amazon only have online stores for some markets: US , Canada and UK, while Ebay is just a marketplace.

For every other countries, Amazon and Ebay are just marketplaces for retailers.

Overstock is a complete different model, they're liquidators.

Well, some of the stuff they have are very competitive in price.

It's not a little corner shop, it's a retail chain. And Patrick is really making a effort to promote and to grow BTC

What? That's not true. Sure they have a marketplace that third parties can sell stuff but it's mostly stuff from their own warehouse. It's no different from Overstock.

IT's good news that they've done this, but let's face it it's only worth buying from Overstock if you're an American. It's not really feasible to order stuff from there for anyone else.

The shipping charges are too steep for international buyers. In addition to that, you have to pay those taxes and duties as well. That makes making overseas purchases from Overstock less attractive than buying some stuff from the local sites of Ebay and Amazon. That said, Overstock and its CEO deserves a lot of support from us, the Bitcoin enthusiasts. 

Yeah, the Import Duty & VAT charges are crazy high, it's a con. Now, if they had a warehouse in the EU...... ;)
