Title: Would you buy a used car with 200k miles ?
Post by: MoreBloodWine on September 14, 2014, 04:51:25 AM
Just curious where a lot of you stand on this who have or ever thought of buying a used car.

I'm in the market for one right now and I got some emails out to a few I found on craigslist that look nice but they all have mileage ranging from high 90k to just over 200k. I know engines can be iffy but as long as the body and frame is in good shape, would you consider a car with around 200k miles on it ?

I used to work at a company and we would replace our fleet vehicles at 200,000 miles.  They were still excellent vehicles because they were well maintained and only a few years old.  I sold several to friends/family and they ALL were happy.  They got a cheap reliable car that was usually only 3-4 years old and looked good.  The IMPORTANT thing to look out for is their service history.  Our company made sure that vehicles were serviced every 7500 miles or less and all mechanical safety issues (tires/brakes/shocks/tranny.etc) were addressed promptly.

Thx for the two replies so far guys. I'm in the market for a "new" car for me and my mom and thx to a loan from a friend that stacks on cash I already had in the bank I have two grand I can spend with a bit extra to cover transfer, tags etc.

I've seen a few "nice on paper" ones and am currently waiting for some replies back. It's just a lot of the so called nicer vehicles seem to all be around 150k plus in miles. I know a lot of it is probably "just in your head" stuff but the miles kind of worry me but it's the higher mile cars that seem nicer that dont as of right now seem to need any work.

If I ask for the vin would something like carfax give me all the shop history stuff mentioned by singlebyte ?

Just checked some of the old listing I bookmarked before I had all the cash I needed and right now the best I have found that is still the only one available as far as I can tell is a 7 passenger minivan.

From the listing...
Quote

All depends on the car and who drove it before you. Mercedes, BMW can do 500k if properly maintained. Italian and french cars can do 50k

What the problem with french and italian cards?

I guess at least the Ferraris can do more than 50k

Some cars are really built to last and if well maintained and serviced I'd have no problem buying one if the price is right.  I personally would prefer that the car is one that is known to last even with high mileage. Good luck with your purchase and I assume it's obvious but I'll say it anyway.  Don't buy anything unless you have a mechanic you trust  look at the vehicle first.

I do know of one that I trust. I wouldnt even be looking at craigslist if all the dealerships around here didnt try to rip you off for double what a private seller would charge. I know that can be a double edged sword but I'd sooner trust a private seller with a mechanic I trust before I would any of the dealerships around here... at least the last one I bought from 10 yrs ago anyway.

Depends on the cars condition. Some might by total trash with 200k miles and some would be fine.

If you plan on doing the maintenance yourself, yes, it's fine. I wouldn't buy that Chevy with 200k miles, though - it's going to be falling apart. In general, American cars don't last more than 200k miles.

Someone else bought it anyway so it's back to the drawing board as the saying goes. As for high mileage, I suppose I could go either way as long as the body and frames good and the engine holds up for at least a year.

This..

and depends on the brand... some are known for doing a crap load more than others... obviously some fancy german or euro brand will be more expensive to get spares (depending on where you live)

but yeah really comes down to price. If you HAVE to have a car, and its insanely cheap.. and runs fine, then why not.

What about the price?

You might be able to find a old reliable car that has many more miles left in it for a great deal.  Some times people just want a vehicle to get from A to B and for a great price.  If you could find the right car that is great on gas, cheap to fix, and known to be reliable even with high miles, then it's a great buy.  These deals are pretty rare but they come around from time to time.

I did! Last year, and let it set a few months, then drove it Sean's Outpost then to LV for the conference. Then, let it set a few months. Then drove it AMT's office then to Rassah's and spent the night. Got to see the infamous coffee table. He and his better half were great hosts. Then drove it home. Oh, I forgot, also drove it to KC last September. Wanna buy it? 1990 Caddy.

My car has 14k miles on it, still runs fine too.

In general, American cars don't last more than 200k miles.

On a more serious note, this is correct. American cars generally aren't as hardy as others. Toyota and Nissan generally has better longevity, and maintenance doesn't cost as much.

I may end up having to goto a dealer, I know it's just a gimmick of sorts but I got one of those things in the mail where they "give" you $2,250 towards a car which in reality that's just theyre marked up profit being knocked off. For the fun of it though, with the two grand I have from various sources and this so called coupon, you may as well say I have $4,250 to spend at the dealer. Probably set something up to go down this Sat which will give me the rest of the week to maybe find a nice Craigslist deal.

This is about a diff car now, looking at an 03 Chevy Blazer with approx 134k miles on it. I checked out diff things on yahoo and they all seem to say the 03 does around 16mpg city. I know this can vary based on certain factors but assuming a base value of 16mpg. Is that "good" for an 03 Blazer ?

No. There is high probability that it will be broken too often. But it depends on price and also, service in your area. But in general I would not advice it.

Why not?
Anything has some value, even a used car with 200k miles :)
It's qaestion just if buyer and seller can agree on price or not.
