Title: "Off-Blockchain model" < What's this mean in business?
Post by: Jamie_Boulder on September 14, 2014, 12:01:31 PM
Currently developing my own Casino, seeing this term being thrown around a lot - is someone able to clarify what this means? do I need to develop my own blockchain? is it possible to simply not broadcast my transactions over the blockchain? if someone could shed some light that would be great.

Thanks in advance!

It means that your casino has a deposit/withdraw function, and the customers don't have to send a transaction every time they want to play.

Satoshi dice for instance didn't have off-blockchain model. Which meant that players sent to a specific address that gave them specific winning odds, this meant that the blockchain got a lot more spammy since everyone was sending their bets to addresses.

Off-blockchain: Using on site deposit and withdrawl system. Example: primedice.com (http://primedice.com)
On-blockchain(on-chain): Automatic transaction, don't need to withdrawl manually. Example: luckyb.it  (http://luckyb.it) directbet.eu (http://directbet.eu)

The advantage of having an off-blockchain system is that your users don't have to cover the transaction cost of 0.0001 Bitcoins in each bet, thus they can make micro-bets like 0.00000001 BTC without being penalized. If you're building a casino look into "provably fair" otherwise you won't get any business.

I can see that there are a few sites (such as SD and LB) still  doing on-chain gambling, so there must be some sort of benefits for it, right?
Can anybody share some ideas?
